Most of the UNs on your watching list I recognize as being in the general area are well clear. There's one fannish household that I understand is standing by for possible evacuation, but essentials are gathered and they are all unharmed and ready to go if they get the word. There's another that's close-ish, but well clear of the danger.
I've been wondering about the HoDo (and sufficiently bogged down in the combination of post-playa depression and re-acclimation to work that I haven't managed to reach out to any of them yet), so this is reassuring. Thanks. *hug*
They are fine. From what I understand, they are upwind of the blaze. The folks at Holly House are ok too, though the parking lot of the mall had a nice view of the flames.
I'm across the bay in Oakland, but we had people coming over for dinner and apparently they could see the smoke and flames on their way over. Bad news all around. I expect I'll be hearing about it at work tomorrow. I'll be donating blood at the next opportunity. (Apparently they lost a big blood bank and they need to replace all their stock, so if anyone reading this is in the Bay Area and has some blood to spare, go to it. Especially if you're O negative.)
None of the reports I've seen have mentioned that they lost a blood bank, just that this was a big drain on their supply. They are sending a whole lot of blood up there (including from other banks) to treat the burn victims RIGHT NOW, but that is going to be leaving them short for the normal day-to-day demand for a while. They need to replenish their supply.
If you have a source regarding the report of losing a blood bank, please point me to it. (Meanwhile, I'll be doing a double-red donation this Saturday. It was scheduled before this fire happened.)
As blood banks do transfer blood between themselves to assure supply, this isn't necessarily limited to the Oakland area. However, don't feel like it will be useless to wait a week or 2 either. Blood is only good for 6 weeks when given and people can donate only every 8 weeks (more for double red donations). If a blood bank did get lost (I didn't see it in the news but I am not local), a constant extra supply will be needed to get things back on track.
It's about 50 miles north of me, so I'm not expecting anyone to be worrying about me being in danger.
As for blood - ss it happens, even before this happened I had an appointment to do a double-red blood donation on Saturday (I'm a regular donor: 15+ gallons). So when the bloodmobile rolls around I'm assured of a spot even if there are a lot of walk-in donors. But if there really are a LOT of walk-in donors, maybe I'd do better to give up my spot to one of them. I know that I would just be postponing my donation until they weren't so mobbed, and if new people were being turned away we'd have less chance of snagging them as regulars. I'll just have to see what the turnout is and how they'd like to handle things if lots of people show up.
