This Saturday. And, wouldn't you know it, I haven't got anything taking me out of town or making me overly busy or anything.

By damn, I'm doin' something for it. I've really gotta plunge back into hard-core allatime songwriting -- I honestly haven't been for a long while now -- and this seems like the way.

Anybody have any ideas of what I should write? Or at least what topic I should take suggestions for?

ETA: Okay, I think I have a working title -- Steampunk Ninjas In Zombie Heights: A Sparkly Vampire Romance.

I mean, if you're gonna go after a trend, go after a bunch, says I.

But do keep the ideas comin', both related to this title and not.

You could always go the Zombie Ninjas route. Nothing like going in for the kill when a limb falls off. and it's tough being a ninja when the stench of your rotting flesh precedes you. What's a necro-ninja to DO? ;)

An album worth of songs, each done in the style of pop music from a different decade, perhaps each song tying in to a book or movie from the decade it takes the musical style from.

The Barsoom Rag?
The Nyarlathotep Lindy?

Given how badly Lucas failed on the prequels, I'd love the Real Saga of the Fall of Anakin Skywalker without all the bad lines.

The writers of Avatar: the Last Airbender actually got the conflict between good and evil right with Zuko. I wish Lucas had given Anakin a tenth of that.

...actually, how about an Avatar song or three? Uncle Iroh certainly deserves a ballad.

A friend of mine posted a great bit from the Brave and the Bold cartoon where the Birds of Prey (Black Canary, Catwoman, and the Huntress) sing a song about the, ahem, "performances" of certain DC male superheroes. It actually makes sense, sort of, in the context of the episode. It involved Batman getting amnesia and deciding to become a gangster and take over Gotham City.

Maybe you could do something that explores the line between good and evil for these superhero guys.

Songs that would appear in MAD magazine, if MAD were what it was in its heyday, now (i.e., topical parodies, songs that could appear in Spy vs. Spy, "The Fold-Out" (which contains a hidden message), etc.). I know MAD isn't purely comics, but I'd certainly not argue with someone who shelved it with them in a library.

Alternatively, how about a tribute to horror comics, or more generally, non-superhero books (yeah, even Archie)?

"Steampunk Ninjas In Zombie Heights: A Sparkly Vampire Romance"

You could also cram in pirates, Lovecraft, furries, and something space-related.

Hell, a song based on SPANC (Space Pirate Amazon Ninja Catgirls) with Lovecraft, Vampires, Zombies and Steampunk added in would do the job!

Steampunk Ninjas... something pirates, then, because well.

But what "something?"

After a minute or so of mental wandering:

(1) Take Steampunk as a setting using past technology to create futuristic results;

(2) The opposite (using futuristic technology to create retro/nostalgic results) would be, um, Star Wars, only that's trademarked so forget it.

(3) Try again: Steampunk bringing things forward, so something ninjas bringing things back. Through time.

(4) Time pirates.

(5) Which works even if Zombie Heights is landlocked- which, considering vampires and their occasional inability to cross running water or seas unaided, makes some sense.

So, there.

(And dammit, I'll be working a convention 24 Hr. Comics Day.)

Since you recently hit the half-century mark, how about a song about each decade of your life.

Contrary to barbarakitten wishes, someone has to do a song about Andrew Shirvell, an assistant attorney general for the state of Michigan. Pharyngula did a blog post about him today. It's almost like a 2010 version of "Maf54 Where Are You?".

What about a song touching on the habit of similarly themed rival movies coming out around the same time? i.e. The Losers vs. the A-Team both released this year, A Bugs Life vs. Ants ect. (I know there are more just not coming to me right not)

....

actually ... The Losers vs. the A-Team (movie versions or comic/TV versions whichever) could be entertaining all on its own.

How about a song, or set of songs, where you're reading the comic to the audience who can't see the artwork. It wouldn't be a comic book opera like "Last Hero on Earth" but rather you reading an issue of "The Waffle" to your fans over a podcast. But with more music. You could sing something like swing jazz for the fight scenes, then Gilbert & Sullivan for the "figuring out the clues" scene, then slow and sultry for the flirt scene with the femme fatale, then opera-like for when The Waffle is contemplating his self-doubts, then J-Pop for when the ninjas attack, heavy metal for the chase scene with the explosion, then marching band Sousa style for the big finale where he catches the villain, retrieves the stolen goods, and convinces his girlfriend the previous flirting was just a trick to get the femme fatale to reveal her sinister plot.

Something like: (and remember, I have absolutely no talent for lyrics)

The first page is a big action splash, you see,
but there's something wrong with the Waffle's knee,
the artist doesn't understand anatomy,
but that okay because it's an exciting scene
He's swinging through a window shouting "Wheeee!"

Then page two is a dangerous fight
With "Pow" and "Wham" then a left and a right
Waffle wins with his syrupy might
But the villain escapes into the night

Ad so on and so forth.
