In our local city government we've just been through a micro version of this, with a progressive mayor making promises and then falling on his face during implementation. The worst part of it was that it allowed our "Tea-Bagger North" crowd the luxury of successfully backing a more extreme replacement than would have been feasible otherwise.
When one side self-destructs, the lunatic fringe on the other is no longer required to pretend sanity. You have to ask yourself, "Who would be the nightmare option in 2012 if there was *no* viable opposition?"
