2D for me too, I think. I don't have anything against 3D per se, I just don't feel like balancing an uncomfortable pair of plastic glasses on my nose for two hours while enduring things leaping out of the screen going "Booga booga" every five minutes because directors at the moment feel obligated to keep reminding the audience that the movie is in THREEEEEEE DEEEEEEEEE.
No Kiera Knightley and no Orlando Bloom? They were two-thirds of what made the first three POTC films watchable. I'm doubting Depp can carry it all on his own without them, however luscious-looking Penny Cruz may be.
After watching him as Lovejoy, I think just about anything is improved with Ian McShane, although sometimes you feel like maybe you should shampoo the furniture and the carpets after... strange sensation...
POTC is unapologetically racist, they gave up trying to tell an actual story 5 minutes into the second film, and Captain Jack Sparrow has gone from being Johnny Depp's rogue creation in the first film to a lame, tame Disney animatronic that spouts greeting-card gags. Oh and did I mention the racism?
And why do you let the racism - if it is indeed racism, a concept too ugly and cynical to brand things with lightly - get to you? Surely you're smart enough to not let a silly action film dictate your views towards race relations, so what prevents you from letting go and enjoying yourself?
I mention it, because the racist crap in the second film tainted my enjoyment of what I'd wanted to be a silly, fun swashbuckling escape. When I'm squirming at scenes filmed in 2006 that belong in a frickin' 1930s Tarzan movie, or watch a dramatic re-enactment of the ending of Song of the South - I can't just "let go and enjoy myself," any more than I could enjoy a pina colada that someone had pissed in.
The fact that YOU didn't notice anything off-putting speaks volumes about the privilege you have as a white straight male to not-notice this stuff.
I'm just waiting to see if POTC has more in common with Tim Powers' book than the name. I'll love it anyway, but if they do a good job of actually adapting the story I will be over-the-moon thrilled.
