"Diplomat" seems so inadequate. "Diplomatic troubleshooter" is closer.

Richard C. Holbrooke has passed away at the age of 69. Inspired by Kennedy's call to action, he dedicated his life to finding common ground between nations and peoples, and bringing more peace to a world which sorely needs it.

Every once in awhile, you get someone who reminds you that the idea of public service is noble indeed. Holbrooke was one of those. Rest well, sir, and thank you.

Holbrooke's death is a tremendous loss. He was a great man and a good man.

For all his serious accomplishments, what I remember best is Holbrooke's appearance on the Colbert Report, mediating between Willie Nelson and Colbert.

Richard Holbrooke is one of the reasons I still dream about entering the foreign service. Those of us who remember the horror in the Balkans will never forget his place in making the Dayton Accords work and at least in one place for that time stopping the killing.

...And Dick Cheney still breathes.

Yeah, this is totally fair.

He stands as an example to all of us that something greater truly CAN be.
