I love it when that happens! Something totally unexpected throws everybody off guard. Some of my faves have been the young deer fighting off a very surprised cougar, the cat vs. the croc, and the angry reporter throwing his shoes at Bush. Never underestimate the power of surprise.

*laughs out loud* I can almost hear the 'What the ... oh crap, get him!' in the players' heads.

Sorry, my main reaction is: You let middle schoolers play organised football in uniforms on groomed fields et cetera there? Your country is some seriously fucked up, man...

Why yes we do. How does allowing organized sports make us a fucked up country?

I agree. When the question is why we have a fucked-up country, there's lots of better reasons than organized sports.

I think he was referring to the long term impact football has on the human body. Even playing one seasons causes permanent damage on an adult including instances of brain damage (especially the blockers). Think of how much worse it is on a growing child.

But that's my theory. He can confirm or deny or say nothing.

As a kid one of my favorite activities was riding my bike around an old abandoned quarry. This being the golden age of Evel Knievel, we fashioned jumps off the hills and gave them names like "Suicide" and "Kamikaze." I cannot begin to count the number of times I crashed my bike there, and the number of scrapes, lacerations, and sprains I came home with. No helmets, no pads (I honestly don't think anyone sold them back then.)

Kids play rough. Always have, always will. Football with proper equipment - especially at the age level shown here - is a lot safer than me riding my bike down a near-vertical 20-foot incline, hitting the improvised ramp, and trying to do three back flips before landing.

I nailed that one once. I have witnesses.

The problem with the old "make them think we don't know how to play the game, then smoke them on a technically legal play" gambit is that you can only do it once.

Once, though, is plenty. }:-{D

Once per gambit, anyway. There's nothing quite like an escalating series of tricks to completely destroy an opponent's confidence. :)

If I understand the sport correctly (which I may not), the real problem is that the defense took their cue from the wrong place. I think they're allowed to move once the quarterback has the ball, regardless of what the offensive line does.

I read once of a player who scored on a punt by taking advantage of the fact that a receiving player does not end the play by touching the ball after it lands. He picked up the ball, turned toward the nearest official as if to hand him the ball, and then ran for it.

A play that would only work once.

Now the next trick (a few plays later) is to fake receiving the ball and stroll forward pretending you have it. Everyone tackles you while the player who really has it runs around the crush.

I'd heard about that play but not seen it. I'd thought it was high school or college; I didn't know it was a bunch of tricksy MIDDLE SCHOOLERS...

Wisconsin pulled a fake punt yesterday in the Rose Bowl; alas, the punter was just too big to be fast enough to score, but he got quite a ways before the free safety got him...

Best trick play in pros EVAR was Green Bay's old Fumblerooski (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fumblerooski) (invented elsewhere, but they and the Nebraska Cornhuskers were famous for it).... alas, now banned in both pro and college ball... too bad. If you can't shake folks up with a little trickery every once in a while, what's to keep'em from getting complacent and ending up blindsided by somebody like a Lawrence Taylor? Keep'em on their toes, I say.

First, I assume the touchdown did count.

Second, wouldn't you love to see something like this happen in the Super Bowl?
