Don't worry, Erick, Fred Phelps and his clan will be talking about it enough for everybody, at the funeral of the 9-year-old girl Jesus didn't save from getting killed.
“Acts of monstrous criminality stand on their own,” Ms. Palin said in a video posted to her Facebook page. “Especially within hours of a tragedy unfolding, journalists and pundits should not manufacture a blood libel that serves only to incite the very hatred and violence that they purport to condemn. That is reprehensible.”
(Via the ever-awesome Balloon Juice, where we find out that this is the Right's new catchphrase (used so far by Instapundit in the WSJ and then tweeted by Jon Henke; I wonder how many instances we'll see by day's end).
Pardon me while I go wash up. I feel dirty even typing this stuff.
Would the biblical Jesus have done this? Doubtful. I also doubt he would have approved of the toxic political atmosphere. The more I read about the shooting, the more wonder if it was the general atmosphere that caused it.
In any case, that's no reason not to try and eliminate the threats (real or implied) in political discourse.
Here, I've spent my whole life keeping an eye out for people who spelled "Erick" the same odd way I do. And now I'm cringing. Think I'll go hit up Netflix for some of Erick Avari's work...
It has now been proved beyond a shadow of a doubt by science that nothing I say will have any impact on reality. This is further proof of that. At least, now I know.
I'm not even going to read the article. I don't suppose that pointing out that it's not all Christians are saying this, most of us are appalled at the stupidity of what happened. Personal belief aside, it has no place in a tragedy of such proportions. But then idiots like Erikson have no sense of decency or proportion.
I specifically gave the link for a Media Matters article that links to the original article, so that you wouldn't have to read it. I do this because I don't want to add to the popularity that the original article would garner in search engines by being listed on more web sites.
And of course not all Christians are saying this. What's appalling is not only that this guy is saying it, but that he's a prominent CNN talking head.
...wait. So I'm at fault, because I don't have faith in Jesus Christ? Is this one of those quantum mechanics sociology things, like gay marriage somehow threatening other peoples' marriages?
I'm taking what small amount of comfort I can in the fact that despite all the political haymaking, so far everyone (as far as I know) is appalled by, condemns and otherwise acknowledges the shooting as wrong.
We can all talk the talk, but when the reality matches the rhetoric, even the most hardcore amongst us are forced to take pause.
Can we institute a program to get all the pundits, extremist politicians and lunatic Tea Partiers off the planet? I just don't have the energy to deal with it anymore. A 9-year-old girl, a federal judge, an aide and too many others are dead, a member of Congress was shot through the head, and the noise machine won't stop. I don't want to rage over it, I don't even want to hear it, I just want them to go away.
Although you are quite right to shame CNN for allowing the shameless liar onto their network, Erickson is better known as the man behind RedState.com (IIRC) and the money man for Mr. O'Keefe's ACORN films and other outrageously deceptive video releases.
Because, y'know, Jesus loved to have people bear false witness against one another.
Especially in the context of the "blood libel" remark that Palin used and is apparently making the rounds on the right, I can't see this as anything other than in-your-face antisemitism. Watch out for someone in that discourse using the word "perfected."
Perhaps Erickson ought to be thinking about "a saving faith in Jesus Christ" for his own flaws and faults, so that he can be a more forgiving and loving Christian himself.
Perhaps Mr. Erickson should stop talking about "saving faith" in Christianity in response to the attempted assassination of a Jewish politician, and the successful murder of her Jewish aide by someone who sure as hell fits the profile of a crypto-neo-Nazi, particularly when Mr. Erickson seems to have a documented record of trying to deflect attention away from neo-Nazi/Christian Identity terrorists, in favour of imaginary Muslims.
Perhaps Mr. Erickson, given his appalling hack journalism at Red State, and his track record of error, also should lose his damn job at CNN. There's no need for CNN to be paying him money for that kind of crap, nor to be providing a CNN kind of soapbox.
