Um.
I seem to be Fan GOH at next year's ConFusion.
And Mark has talked me into attempting a production, in one way or another, of The Rocky Horror Muppet Show.
Cthulhu help me.
ETA: And I think I have to ask a very important question: Should I update the jokes? I'm looking at the script, and I think it's still pretty good... but it's a product of its time. There are many, many new possibilities, from anime to the Tea Party to Iron/Top Chef to NAMBLA/Prop 8 to etc. Thoughts? Should I leave it alone, or buff it up?

Date: 2011-01-23 11:03 pm (UTC)My vote would be to update it; you're so clever and I think you might actually have more fun with it that way. Keep the timeless classics but have a go at letting your wicked humor at current events.

Date: 2011-01-23 11:05 pm (UTC)You should buff it up if you've got time and the idea appeals. Partly because it'll be fun, and partly because you often change your songs to be current or different and that's one of the many reasons you're so fantastic live.

Date: 2011-01-23 11:10 pm (UTC)I'd say trust your muse...if some elements seem like updating would do em good, then do it. As with most of these things, it's your sense of humor, and your sense of "fun" that causes people to flock to you. I love the NAMBLA joke mention above.
In short, have fun with it..if I can be there, then I'll have to be there.
Praise Cthulhu indeed. I'm happy for you, though, Cthulhu and Sanity rarely go hand in hand. ;-)

Date: 2011-01-24 12:36 am (UTC)If you have irresistible new jokes, then update. Also, consider that the original script is older than some of your audience will be, so you might want to update to make sure the jokes aren't lost on them.

Date: 2011-01-24 12:58 am (UTC)Produce, definitely. Update, sparingly. In the old rhyme "Make new friend, but keep the old / One is silver and the other gold", you could substitute 'jokes' for 'friends' and still be accurate.

Date: 2011-01-24 01:31 am (UTC)I haven't seen RHMS before, but I would be wary about updating the jokes. As Jay Sherman once said of movies, "If it's a remake of a classic, RENT THE CLASSIC." But I heard again "Online Religion" recently and while I got the techie jokes, I knew some people wouldn't get them. So my vote would be to only update the jokes that need updating. (And I did like "The Great Muppet Caper" regardless of how successful it was.)

Date: 2011-01-24 03:31 am (UTC)I'd buff it up. More than anything else, updating the Muppet aspects themselves, if you follow me. Where have they been in the past, oh, twenty years? Lots of mourning for Jim?

Incidentally, if you should ever write a more "mainstream" version of it, minus the filk and fandom references, I know a certain theatre company who would gobble it up.

Date: 2011-01-24 06:16 pm (UTC)Beyound that, I'd say that updating should be avoided unless you deem the joke to be so old that it's the humor equivalent of That Thing In The Tupperware From The Back Of Your Refrigerator - old, and not likely to be appreciated.

Date: 2011-01-24 09:32 pm (UTC)Who were all those children in that tape (well, not quite children, but some were half the age they are now).
The performance there was (constantly) an update of the written script.
But then again my memory has been Memorex, not just memory, I see all.
Some jokes need to be updated, lines from performance reviewed to see if they would continue to fit in. Guest star character, Mikhail Gorbachev, might not relate to a 2012 audience as well as he did in 1987, particulary since most of us have forgetten that Afganistan was the Russian's problem before it was out problem. (And long before that, the British problem).
Then again, I would probably miss new jokes about Lady GaGa, or political commentators for that matter.
I'm sure Foozie will do his best to get the gang back together, but when he says: "Tom, we need to rehearse", believe him.
