Um.

I seem to be Fan GOH at next year's ConFusion.

And Mark has talked me into attempting a production, in one way or another, of The Rocky Horror Muppet Show.

Cthulhu help me.

ETA: And I think I have to ask a very important question: Should I update the jokes? I'm looking at the script, and I think it's still pretty good... but it's a product of its time. There are many, many new possibilities, from anime to the Tea Party to Iron/Top Chef to NAMBLA/Prop 8 to etc. Thoughts? Should I leave it alone, or buff it up?

Wish I could be there to witness this awesomeness.

My vote would be to update it; you're so clever and I think you might actually have more fun with it that way. Keep the timeless classics but have a go at letting your wicked humor at current events.

Well, that's specifically why I mentioned NAMBLA (which, in this case, would of course be the National AMphibian - Bacon Love Association).

I'd say update it, but give it some playtesting in small settings to see if it's working. (We already know what does and doesn't work in the original.) As usual, this is me splitting the difference :-)

ohmy. XD

You should buff it up if you've got time and the idea appeals. Partly because it'll be fun, and partly because you often change your songs to be current or different and that's one of the many reasons you're so fantastic live.

You know that I've been one of the people saying "Please do it somewhere, and record it for those of us who cannot make it". :-) I'm glad the opportunity is there for you.

I'd say trust your muse...if some elements seem like updating would do em good, then do it. As with most of these things, it's your sense of humor, and your sense of "fun" that causes people to flock to you. I love the NAMBLA joke mention above.

In short, have fun with it..if I can be there, then I'll have to be there.

Praise Cthulhu indeed. I'm happy for you, though, Cthulhu and Sanity rarely go hand in hand. ;-)

How many of the original case can you get to perform in it this time? And will they all have the same script version?

I guess I know which tape I am going to pull out of the closet to digital jump now....

"YAAAAAAAAAYYYY!!!!"

If you have irresistible new jokes, then update. Also, consider that the original script is older than some of your audience will be, so you might want to update to make sure the jokes aren't lost on them.

I loved the original but yes, I'll chime in with "update." Some of them really don't translate 20-odd years later.

OH YES.

Produce, definitely. Update, sparingly. In the old rhyme "Make new friend, but keep the old / One is silver and the other gold", you could substitute 'jokes' for 'friends' and still be accurate.

Congrats on being the Fan GoH. What do you have to do to be recognized as a fan and not a filker?

I haven't seen RHMS before, but I would be wary about updating the jokes. As Jay Sherman once said of movies, "If it's a remake of a classic, RENT THE CLASSIC." But I heard again "Online Religion" recently and while I got the techie jokes, I knew some people wouldn't get them. So my vote would be to only update the jokes that need updating. (And I did like "The Great Muppet Caper" regardless of how successful it was.)

Update, but with caution. Don't change unless you honestly have a better joke than the old one.

And wish I could be there, but Michigan? In winter? Not this Texan.

I'm reading it now on your website. Please please please keep the line about the naked pictures of Madonna. They're better now that she's older.

Either that or replace her name with Betty White.

Hm. Michigan in January? I might actually be able to do that.

I'd buff it up. More than anything else, updating the Muppet aspects themselves, if you follow me. Where have they been in the past, oh, twenty years? Lots of mourning for Jim?

There's an old story of a sculptor who spent 5 years on a statue, and when it was completed, destroyed it because he wasn't completely satisfied.

Don't get so attached to your own work that you're not willing to do what's necessary.

Incidentally, if you should ever write a more "mainstream" version of it, minus the filk and fandom references, I know a certain theatre company who would gobble it up.

That reminds me, a few years ago a local community college theater did the Rocky Horror Puppet Show (http://www.collintheatrecenter.com/PastShows/2006/RockyHorror/Photos.htm) a straight foward production of the show, except that all the Transylvanians (except Frank) wore body puppets like ones used in the Lion King stage show. Rocky was a giant puppet operated by three people. They had their own versions of Statler and Waldorf providing the cues for the audience participation lines and they had a George W. Bush impersonator (via TV screens) playing the part of the Criminologist.

It was an amazing production, especially for a community college.

If Seanan McGuire is there, perhaps you should edit the toy chainsaw line accordingly.

Beyound that, I'd say that updating should be avoided unless you deem the joke to be so old that it's the humor equivalent of That Thing In The Tupperware From The Back Of Your Refrigerator - old, and not likely to be appreciated.

I would avoid subjects and jokes that would date the material quickly. Sure, today we have the tea party. There's no certainty that they won't implode and 5 years from now nobody will have a clue what that joke you wrote means anymore. Although you can have fun with that concept too by explaining that everything is obsolete as soon as it's made -- like this joke.

I was just re-watching my video of that 1987 OVFF presentation.
Who were all those children in that tape (well, not quite children, but some were half the age they are now).
The performance there was (constantly) an update of the written script.
But then again my memory has been Memorex, not just memory, I see all.
Some jokes need to be updated, lines from performance reviewed to see if they would continue to fit in. Guest star character, Mikhail Gorbachev, might not relate to a 2012 audience as well as he did in 1987, particulary since most of us have forgetten that Afganistan was the Russian's problem before it was out problem. (And long before that, the British problem).
Then again, I would probably miss new jokes about Lady GaGa, or political commentators for that matter.

I'm sure Foozie will do his best to get the gang back together, but when he says: "Tom, we need to rehearse", believe him.

-Tim
