New place in Ann Arbor, just behind the Verizon store next to Whole Foods on Washtenaw. [profile] markbernstein reminded me of them today, when he called to say they were already open. So I went over there.

Very friendly little place, with long tables for seating. Rather than the usual blues, they were playing bluegrass.

I forgot to get sauces, which didn't matter, because the pulled pork was very good. The baked beans were a little spicier than I like, but full of flavor (and meat). The "beans and rice" turned out to be just rice, but that worked out because I used it to temper the baked beans. The cornbread was not quite Southern, but close -- much closer than the cake-style Jiffy stuff we're used to this far north.

Can't wait to try the ribs. :)

Where's your favorite restaurant of late? Not your all-time-favorite, necessarily, just someplace you've enjoyed recently.

Just last night I treated myself to dinner at Macaroni Grill before meeting up with my husband for a movie. (He can't have wheat or dairy, so I make sure to indulge at every opportunity where I won't be eating it in front of him. It doesn't bother him when I eat stuff he can't have; it bothers me.)

The restaurant we've found most recently that we can both enjoy is Chow Asian Street Food, at Parker and the Dallas North Tollway. One of these days I will remember that no appetizer they offer is as satisfying for the buck as their edamame. =)

There's one in my town too. I didn't know it was a chain until I saw a second one. It's good food, but feels a little pricey for a chain. Or maybe I can't get my head around a fancy chain of restaurants.

The most recent place I went to was January, and that place was Bandanas. Its a bbq place down in Missouri. It was very good, about as good as Red, Hot & Blue. I had the pulled pork and beef plate. The beef was really tender and the sweet sauce was excellent.

Its definitely a place I want to go to again.

One of my favorite restaurants in my neighborhood in San Diego is Casa Machado. Very good, very authentic Mexican food. And their hot carrots are wonderful!

A Terrible Beauty. It's an Irish pub. Excellent grub, a decent selection of brewski, and on Wednesday nights? Seisiun! Our head guy has harp, Irish flute, fiddle, and cello; there is also [livejournal.com profile] fiddleface and at least one other fiddler besides, a bodhran player, a banjo, [livejournal.com profile] solarbird on bouzouki, [livejournal.com profile] annathepiper on guitar, and myself on djembe. Tucker *and* tunes, WIN!

I've been grubbing at the Great Khan Mongolian BBQ lately. You get to pick out two starches (rice or noodles), a big bowl of veg & a small bowl of protein. Then they stir fry it up on a huge wok. I'm particularly pleased by the big plastic picture of yurts in the window.

I'm rather fond of this place:

http://www.funxion.com/welcome/funxion.html

It's all organic "healthy" food, with no added salt, fat or sugar... And it's actually very very good...

It becomes a bar after dark, but I only ever go there to pick up lunch, since it's not too far from my office.

Where do I still find myself going out to eat on a regular basis? Typically places that charge $10 or less for a meal. That said, here's the list: Jersey Mike's, Skyline Chili, Hunan Wok, Buffalo Wings & Rings. Pho Mi (a Vietnamese restaurant) just opened near me and what I've from them was very good.

When you get back down to Columbus, check out City Barbecue. The menu is a lot like the one linked for Satchel's. They've got lots of locations now (been popping up like weeds).

In Rochester, I'm partial to Aladdin's Natural Eatery (http://www.aladdinsonline.com/) on Monroe Avenue -- wondrous Greek and Mediterranean dishes, generous portions, reasonable prices, decent vegetarian options if one's inclined, pleasant atmosphere.

Or, when I'm feeling more carnivorous, I'm a big fan of Dinosaur Bar-B-Que (http://www.dinosaurbarbque.com/). I've only been to the Rochester location (Court Street, on the Genesee), but there are also locations in Syracuse, Troy and Harlem. And for either BBQ or Cajun, I'm also a frequent visitor to Beale Street Cafe (http://www.bealestreetcafe.com/) in Rochester's South Wedge.

Finally, big props to Rheinblick German Restaurant (http://restaurant-rheinblick.blogspot.com/) here in Canandaigua, just a few blocks from my home. It's been there a few years, but I just managed to make it there for the first time last month, for my mom's birthday meal. (I had the sauerbraten; lovely stuff, and the red cabbage served with it was the best cabbage I'd ever had that hadn't been slawed or krauted.)

For a minute, I thought your Aladdin was a franchise of this place (http://www.aladdinseatery.com/), which we enjoyed in Columbus awhile back. Not too far from the old OVFF hotel, just on the other side of the Loop and turn right.

Pulled Pork and Salmon

Date: 2011-02-15 12:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] writer-jack.livejournal.com
When I lived in NC I used to get invited to pulled pork backyard picnics where the entire pig was steamed in a big pork cooker on wheels which all the local places rented. When it was done you walked up to the pig and pulled your own favorite parts and fixed it up from a table full of sauces. I've yet to find a restaurant that makes port as good as I remember those backyard barbecues.
I would have to say these days my favorite place to eat id Longhorn Steak House, but I rarely get the steaks, I love to dig into the salmon, which I don't think anyplace, even the seafood chains, does as well as they do.

Last night I ate at a local favorite sushi and Thai place with Tony and Judy, Gekko Sushi. The service was a little off, but the salmon was particularly good. Saturday night I've been promised dinner at an excellent new Japanese and Chinese restaurant by an intimate who does not eat sushi; he went there with a few of his friends from the office who DO eat sushi, and they said it was the best sushi they'd ever had, so I have high hopes -- and if the sushi doesn't work out, I know the Chinese food is reasonable.

I haven't been there lately, but one place I love is W.W. Cousins:

They have amazing hamburgers, but more importantly, they have an even more amazing toppings bar.

It's been a while since I was there but Cozymel's Mexican Grill (http://www.cozymels.com/) is a good place for lunch. I first went there 10 years ago with my co-workers. You know, it was the first time I went to a Mexican restaurant that didn't have a drive thru. (I was still new to Chicagoland so there was still some culture shock.)

I also want to give a shout out to Rock Bottom Brewery (http://www.rockbottom.com/). Good food. Good beer. Good service. If you go, order the nachos appetizer. It's the size of a medium pizza with actual cheeze.
