Several weeks ago, I recorded a parody for someone. He wrote the words, and just wanted a good performance, and I said sure, quoted him a price, got it done, all good. Then he went and made a music video of it.

And then it got mentioned in Time Magazine's Swampland blog.

Just so we're all clear, I did not write this. I merely recorded it. However, I'll take whatever positive attention I can get at this point, so hey. ;)

Awesome!! :)

Warning: Smith hails from Ann Arbor, so the rewrite has a liberal take.

Wait what?! o_O

Perhaps someone is confused with Port Huron (http://www.h-net.org/~hst306/documents/huron.html) (and about what year this is)?

Other than that, I got nuthin' either. I thought that was a weird little nonsequitur too.

"Liberal take" means "doesn't support the GOP party line 100%".

Remember, conservatives can't afford to laugh at themselves, because if they ever started they'd never be able to stop.

In the immortal words of the Texas Tornados, A Little Bit is Better than Nada (as written by the late, great Doug Sahms): http://www.myspace.com/texastornados/music/songs/little-bit-is-better-than-nada-12188377

With a little bit of luck, maybe this led to some Google-ing on you. The good kind, not the creepy, big bro kind.

That's cool! Congrats!

On a quasi-related note, one of my projects I'll get around to one day (once I get tired of MMORPGs, my TV shows, etc) is to do a filk music podcast. There are podcasts for funny music, celtic music, even pirate music, but I can't find one for sci-fi/fantasy themed music. So I'd make one. So my question is, would you mind if I played some of your songs on it if I ever start this project? It would be the free versions you have available on your site and I would give credit to you and plug your site, as I would for anyone.

This probably won't ever happen but if it did, what would you think?

No problem at all. And if you want some of the better-quality versions, ask. I need to upload a bunch of stuff to Music Alley anyway....

Thanks. But if this ever happens it would be for promoting filk music itself and encourage people to buy the albums. So would lower quality be better to get people to buy (given the bit rate of the average podcast) or would it be like giving away other people's songs?

No no no, you're looking at it wrong. You really should be aiming for (I think, anyway) the best reasonable quality given the likely bandwidth used. If you're posting it right to iTunes, then use the best bandwidth you can get. If you're at a premium for space, or you think a number of your listeners are on dial-up, chop the bit rate down some. I suspect a bit rate of 128-192 Kbps will be just fine for you.

As I and many others have learned, fans will buy the albums of those artists they love, even if they have to delay it because of cash flow. People who don't pay, and take pride in their not paying... likely wouldn't pay anyway.

Not even the Pentagon can make Korea look good. I know, because I just got extended for an extra four months here.

Just out of curiosity, what do you charge for something like that (you can PM me or e-mail me at my LJ address, if you'd rather)?

I would love to have a really good performance of one of my parodies (especially this one).
