I have a friend who lives on the north end of the North Island (literally; she has a beach front house). They felt the temblor as far north as Wellington (the south end of the North island). She's been glued to the TV ever since it happened. The friends/people/family she has in CC are all ok but she's saying the images are reminding her of 9/11.
I and a few other furs were chatting with a college fur in Christchurch. She felt the tremors there, then the news started to pour in.
New Zealand's TV3 reports a 7.1 shake with a 5.0 aftershock. Power outages were reported, with partial phone service that officials were asking folks to reserve for emergency calls to a special phone number since their 911 (NZ: 111) service was down. Ambulance service was maxed out, and the main hospital was evac'ed for structure damage.
