Son of a bitch.

(If you can't see the embed, click here.)

I call special attention to Jeremy Soule's music. This, his second remix of the Morrowind theme, is even more cinematic, more epic, than his astounding work for Oblivion.

Oh, and the voice over guy? MAX VON SYDOW.

Now.

Nownownownownow.

NOW!

Sorry Tom, you gotta wait until November like the rest of us. :D

And man, oh man, it's gonna be a long wait. It all looks so good, I won't know what to play first in terms of character.

No idea either. Seriously, if the combat system is like that of Oblivion, I may end up going with a sniper again (it worked extremely well there). And, maybe it's just because I don't play MMORPGs and haven't seen, erm, the lay of the land, but THAT, by damn, is footage of a fantasy world. That's the kind of stuff I always imagined if RuneQuest's Glorantha ever made it to a 3D engine.

Combat has been waaaay overhauled - http://www.gameinformer.com/games/the_elder_scrolls_v_skyrim/b/xbox360/archive/2011/01/24/skyrim-building-better-combat.aspx

Sniping will apparently be even MORE effective this time, as they're taking inspiration from one of the more popular Oblivion mods. Daggers will be a lot more useful for sneakers, melee is more interesting, and from the sound of things, magic is gonna be so much more versatile.

(So yeah, so torn as to what to play - rogue, battlemage, general smashy guy...)

And yeah, the world looks gorgeous. Gonna be so nice to run around in.

I should probably try it sometime. Maybe in the wait for Skyrim. Hell, I still haven't completed the Oblivion main quest.

Holy crap. That's some awesome music, all for a game?? They gonna sell a soundtrack album? ('cause I *so* don't RPG, any form.)

If they follow the example of the last couple of games, it'll come included with a Collector's Edition. Or, you can just cast about for Morrowind (http://www.mediafire.com/?znkay2icfgi) or Oblivion (http://www.fileplanet.com/163852/160000/fileinfo/Elder-Scrolls-IV:-Oblivion---All-Original-Music-Score) soundtrack downloads. ;) And, if you want to be utterly legit, you can buy them from DirectSong (https://www.directsong.com/index.php#/shop/set/1/4).

And, if you think the music there is awesome, check out the voice cast for their recently-released Fallout: New Vegas (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1706601/fullcredits#cast). Jonathan Pryce and Lynda Carter regularly work on their games. Bethesda doesn't mess around.

A-list games or anything close to those usually sell soundtrack albums these days; it makes sense, considering they've got people like Soule, Clint Mansell, Hans Zimmer, etc writing for them.

Looks good, but to be honest, I'm getting really tired of traditional serious fantasy. If they _have_ to do fantasy can't they do Discworld just once?

I'm not tired of traditional fantasy, but I'm at least glad the Elder Scrolls world is in a consistent universe that is only marginally Tolkienesque. I'd really love something from Glorantha, or a low-fantasy game set in Chalion or mythic Ireland.

I like fantasy, too, but I also like the various types of science fiction and numerous alternate fiction (what's the proper term for strange, weird and unusual fiction that's not SF/F?) It could also be the "epic"-ness of these fantasy games, where they pile on the immense importance on everything you do until it becomes meaningless, like if you don't kill that anemic goblin hiding in the corner the entire world will fall into everlasting hellfire and increased taxes. One of the reasons my friends and I still play World of Warcraft is mixed in with the traditional epic fantasy quests you get things like making a beer run through bandit territory for a thirsty dwarf, or you need to throw explosive bananas at annoying monkeys.

[nods] And that's one of the things I like most of all about the Elder Scrolls games: You can completely avoid the main quest. There are usually some specific actions you have to take to trigger it, and if you don't, it never progresses. Best example: In Morrowind, you're supposed to report to Caius in Balmora. Don't go? No main quest. Eighty gazillion side quests, including many of the same ones you'd do in the main quest, just... more as places to loot and explore, rather than acquiring the next piece of the puzzle.

What I'd really like is an open source MMO that's easy to create stuff with. Then people could make all sorts of worlds and quests. Like maybe a world where you can play a pizza delivery guy with an armored/weaponized car who has to avoid aluminum dogs to deliver a large order to redneck ninjas who need the leftover boxes to smash the fairy minions of a demonic sheep before he takes over the world.

If you could make an MMO, what would it be?

The term I've seen for those is "fantastic literature" or "weird tales."

If you don't like the utter EPICness of MMOs, I suggest checking out Morrowind, the Elder Scrolls game two iterations before this one. Very much non-Tolkienesque, despite the presence of elves and dwarves. Utterly alien architecture, animals, aesthetic, and feel of the world.

(It's also a lot more open than what I've seen of Oblivion, and what will likely be true of Skyrim. Fly spells!)

Can't play Morrorwind. All of the people I play games with online use Macs. Only two of those have windows installed for dual-booting but unfortunately both of them are on a fantasy-free diet. Three years of almost nothing but epic fantasy has proved too much for them and they gag at the sight of magic elves. The only reason they play World of Warcraft now is because of the gnomes (quite silly), the increased number of not-serious quests (even more silly) and the group they play with (Puns Galore).

If it helps, Morrowind is a nine-year-old game. Most PCs you can get right now will run it easily, being well above the recommended spec that existed in 2002. Get a cheapie off eBay, or wait for a good sale at Micro Center or Woot or 1saleaday or whatver your preferred discount house is.

Well, Morrowind is single-player, although I see that this may not help out in your playing!

I don't play MMOs myself, but I strongly approve of any group that's named Puns Galore.

Now that I think about it, Skyrim might just push a few friends into installing windows for gaming. They were terribly tempted with Fallout: New Vegas, and this trailer might make it irresistible.

But still, as a group we're wishing for an MMO with a significant difference yet fun to play.

So far our WoW guild names are: Those Meddling Kids, Fluffy Bunny Rampage, Disgruntled Wombats, and Puns Galore. When people comment on Puns we tell them we're Pussy's little annoying brothers. More often than not there's a pause (sometimes over several minutes) then a text message saying they got it with lots of LOLs ;-)

I'm convinced that if Shakespeare was alive today, he'd be writing for video games and that DaVinci would be designing levels.

It's the first true art-form of the 21st Century.

I just watched that video on a Windows 7 Screen, hi-def with DX10. The only thing keeping it from being mistaken for reality is depth of focus on some shots. I bought the Oblivion soundtrack and used to start my day at work by blasting it from the speakers on my office computer.

It's going to be a great year. Just finished Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2, am working on Red Dead Redemption.

We're less than two weeks from Dragon Age 2, then LA Noire from Rockstar in April.

...and that is just the first four months of the year.

Mass Effect 3, which promises an ending to a saga reminiscent of a Stravinsky, is also coming out this November......

Money is tight as hell right now; as I could not justify Fallout: New Vegas, neither can I justify Dragon Age 2... yet. I still have years of play with their predecessors, and with the Elder Scrolls games, and Neverwinter Nights, and Puzzle Quest 1 and 2, and a number of other things I haven't even installed yet. I can wait for the prices of the Signature Editions to come down.

But Skyrim is mine on Day One.
