With all of the very good-looking movies coming out lately and soon -- Thor and Captain America are of course hot on my list -- it's somewhat gratifying to know that big-budget stinkbombs continue to provide us with RiffTrax fodder.

Here you go with the teaser trailer for Conan and the official trailer for The Smurfs.

As dumb as these movies look, I've got no complaints about the casting. But then, I would probably watch a movie about dish washing if it had Jason Momoa or Neil Patrick Harris in it. ("Coming this Summer: Dishwashers! Jason Momoa and Neil Patrick Harris wash dishes and fight crime!")

Indeed. I certainly have no objection to either NPH or Hank Azaria (Gargamel) getting a paycheck.

Aaaah, I hadn't recognized Azaria, but now I see why he was able to do a passable impression of the voice.

And damn if they didn't make him LOOK like a live-action Gargamel.

Hey, that could be a very hip movie!
But you know lazy scriptwriters would have Harris' character smokin' something, way too sarcastic, like totally demotivated, and desperately needs somebody straighten his head out to be committed to Doing Good again.
I'm not sure I could stand it if they made this Jason's character or if they get afeared of all the slashers and arbitrarily stuff in soembody's actress-du-jur who's supposed to "fix" him.

Okay, whoever thought The Smurfswas a good idea should just be hanged right now. Maybe even tortured beforehand.

Probably the same person responsible for the Underdog movie.

Underdog would have had potention had they played it straight: mostly live action with Underdog/Shoeshine Boy, Polly Purebred, and Riffraff as CGI animorphics that no one reacted to as being non-human. It looks like they wanted to make a Krypto movie but couldn't get the rights from DC/Warners so went with Underdog instead (it's the same, right? UGH!!)

Now that you mention it, Underdog would have been halfway decent if it had been done all in CGI.

Conan vs The Smurfs would have been a better idea. Put Smurfette in Red Sonja's chainmail bikini, have Gargamel actually catch Smurfs and turn them into gold...

And now, just for having thought all that up and shared it with you all, I'm going to go smurf myself for the good of the gene pool.

Who would even *think* that a Conan remake was a good idea?

Hate to be a bit of a thread-jacker, but since Tom introduced me to Pharyngula at http://www.scienceblogs.com/ this is as good a place as any to ask my question. Has anyone else have problems getting to this site? I haven't been able to for about the past week or so but I can do so at work. I have Comcast and some of the bloggers on there have been a bit critical of Comcast but I don't want to see a conspiracy where there isn't one. If no one else is having trouble, I was going to contact Comcast tomorrow and ask what's up with that. There was a DoS attack on them a while ago and this could be the after effects.

Back to the movies...I have not seen, and never intend to see deliberately, Yogi Bear. Maybe it's good that Dan Aykroyd doesn't show his face on screen any more, and it's nice that he can try to sound like Daws Butler, but the entire concept of this movie skeeves me out.

The heart of the problem is the timidity of all those megacorporations that own movie studios. They don't want to risk any new ideas, so they do multi-million-dollar remakes of old stuff. Nobody was clamoring for The Smurfs or Alvin and the Chipmunks.

And what scares me is that Captain America was a TV-movie - twice. It sucked both times. In the 90's an attempted cartoon series about Cap failed because the networks didn't want little kids to see gunfire, death, the Holocaust or the oppression of Europe. Yet they wanted it set during World War II to make it "educational." Educating them to believe what? That Nazis were just generic bad guys like Cobra? (The series Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes has done just that - their Captain America origin episode substituted the Red Skull and Hydra for Hitler and the Wehrmacht.)

Fanboy hearts may beat faster at the thought of the Captain America movie, but I have a good suspicion that they will stop when the movie premieres.
