Sadness. Jack Hardy, a die-hard folkie who I think would've fit right in with the filk community on every level, has passed away at the age of 63. His Fast Folk music co-op was the first to record such artists as Lyle Lovett, Shawn Colvin, Tracy Chapman, and Suzanne Vega; every Monday, from the 1970s until just recently, he held workshops for musicians, who were supposed to bring songs no older than a week.

Any house filks in your neck of the woods this spring? Please do promote them here. Or post any recent song lyrics you've done. Or critique said song lyrics (be gentle and constructive, please).

There's house filks in Milwaukee every month. I'm not the keeper of the e-mail list, but if there's anyone out there who would like to attend and doesn't have Carol's contact information, I can get you in contact.

I wrote this one last month, when the topic of Burlesque anthems came up in my blog. It's my first credible blues piece, and it's been received well at my monthly house filks thusfar.

This Way
By Catt Kingsgrave '11

I like it best when the lights are off
When the curtain's down, and the masks are doffed
When you got needs, and baby, I do too
And they both fit together like they don't need glue
And I like it! You know I like it this way;
No sleaze, no tease, no debts to pay
Yeah, I like it; this particular bliss
When nothing's on the table except for this...

I like it best when the hunger growls
And you got to follow where it prowls.
It ain't no bargain, and it ain't no score;
It's just once you tasted it, you gotta have more,
Because you like it -- yeah, it flows like wine
When you get yours, and baby, I get mine.
And I like it; we're tangled up real tight
And gettin' these knots undone could take all night...

Baby, don't underrate it,
Baby, don't make this bad.
Baby, we all get jaded,
But that don't mean that there ain't no fun to be had!

I like it best when the heat's up high
The sweat tricklin' right down your thigh.
When the trumpets wail and the baseline pounds
And you know in your bones you got to get on down
Because you like it, and you want it again
Cause it ain't a game when everybody wins.
Yeah, you like it -- ain't no need to hide,
Just grab that baseline tight... and baby, let's ride

Right on, ride it like you like it.
How you like it?
Baby, show me how you like it...

Not so much of a housefilk, but Lunacon is this weekend (where many of those who attend NY housefilks will be at.)

There likely will be a housefilk in the next month or two to help plan Contata in July.

Never met him. I have a few issues of Fast Folk - record album magazines! In my last filk concert (Conclave - you were there!) I sang his song, "St. Clare," because Michelle Sagara West heard it on a Suzanne Vega album and liked it.

And here are some lyrics:

Can You Believe It?
Link to MP3

I got a tube of glue and a ten-cent science book club model
That you assemble to the shape of a dream
I’ve got a telescope and I’m learning my first constellations
To navigate it to the distant galaxies

Can you believe it? They are flying to the moon
They got the rocket built it’s leaving very soon
Come running now they’re counting down on the TV
The greatest wonder that the world will ever see

And when the century is done
The world will know that we have won
And we will rise up in the sun

Now forty years have passed and I still have that old model
But though it’s broken now I haven’t lost the dream
Some hearts are breaking that there’s no one past the moon though
We see through borrowed eyes what no one’s ever seen

Can you believe it there are robots roaming Mars
We’re looking deep into the birthplaces of stars
And every day they’re finding signs of brand new worlds
An we are watching as the universe unfurls

And as the century goes by
The farther out our senses fly
We are inheriting the sky

Jack's "The Drinking Song" is one of the greatest drinking songs ever. I was planning to make it my selection for the local ukulele group's drinking theme meeting on Saturday (3-19) and I'll be sure to tell them a little about Jack and some of the great things he did and great people he inspired. I learned The Drinking Song from Dave Van Ronk's recording.

On Saturday 3-26 the Denver filk group meets at my house. If you know anyone who will be in Denver and might like to be there, they should contact me here or on facebook.

Here's my latest song. It's one I made up in the shower and wrote down afterwards. To the obvious tune. It scans just fine if you sing it right.

Were you there when he utilized his time?
Were you there when he utilized his time?
He used it to add 2 extra syllables to the word “use” which is a waste of time.
Were you there when he utilized his time?

Were you there when he allocated resources?
Were you there when he allocated resources?
He gave me a pencil sharpener.
I don’t have any pencils.
Were you there when he allocated resources?

Were you there when he utilized his time?
Were you there when he utilized his time?
He used it to add 2 extra syllables to the word “use” which is a waste of time.
Were you there when he utilized his time?

Were you there when he centralized control?
Were you there when he centralized control?
He had just decentralized;
Now he must reorganize.
Were you there when he centralized control?

Were you there when he utilized his time?
Were you there when he utilized his time?
He used it to add 2 extra syllables to the word “use” which is a waste of time.
Were you there when he utilized his time?

Were you there when he outsourced all our jobs?
Were you there when he outsourced all our jobs?
Now our head cashier
Is somewhere in North Korea.
Were you there when he outsourced all our jobs?

Were you there when he utilized his time?
Were you there when he utilized his time?
He used it to add 2 extra syllables to the word “use” which is a waste of time.
Were you there when he utilized his time?

Would you like to make up more words to this song?
Would you like to make up more words to this song?
I don’t mind if you do.
What you say is up to you.
If you want to, please write more words to this song.
