Well, see, that's the thing. As [livejournal.com profile] hbruton and [livejournal.com profile] shsilver point out above, this is rank hypocrisy -- the Repubs constantly bellow that they want smaller government, and also constantly do shit like this. And, yeah, this one's completely unenforceable (and, if you read the story, you'll see the IRS doesn't want to enforce it). It has no chance of becoming law -- zero, none. All it is is a sop to the religious right, and to those who need to have power over women.

It's not hypocrisy when Republicans do it. They're doing it for the taxpayer!
/snark off

Of course all the abortions they pay for will be done in untracable cash.

It also proves Rachel Maddow right about them not really being small government conservatives. They're big government conservatives.

I think you seriously underestimate the ability of Democrats in general, and Obama in particular, to surrender to conservatives.

Actually, I really am not worried about this one. I'm not worried about a lot of things these yutzes have proposed lately, except for the fact that the conversation has become bloody fucking insane. The Republicans' ultimate goal is to dismantle government completely, and their primary method of doing so is to demonstrate that government doesn't work and is evil.

Which, of course, is going to be the case, when the people in charge of it have no desire to get anything done, and are evil.

Disagree. *They* don't want to dismantle the government. You are right, that government their way doesn't work and is evil, but their goal is fear, uncertainty, doubt, totalitarianism, and Thoughtcrime. Fnord, Fnord.

What's *gonna happen* is that *we* are going to dismantle their sad excuse for a government... the question is, are we gonna get the rebuild right or are we going to royally screw the pooch.

I hope we don't royally screw the pooch; if the wheels all come off and our infrastructure goes to hell I've about six weeks to live.

Agreed. I think a lot of us round here on lj and DW have about a month, tops, if our current medical infrastructure goes away, or even wobbles significantly, or drops too many *more* large swathes of people.
And don't get me started on failure of food or water delivery infrastructure for places like Los Angeles, or any other big urban centers.

"if the wheels all come off and our infrastructure goes to hell I've about six weeks to live."

So, you're saying you'll last about two weeks more than I will.

If the infrastructure goes to hell, I have no idea where I'm going to get dinner. I figure I'll starve in four weeks, tops.

Dude. Dinner is easy. It's the meds that are gonna be difficult.

(Actually, come to think of it, IF I can get the dosing right, one good slaughter and some careful dessicating and capping and I *should* be ok for a while. [livejournal.com profile] annathepiper discussed this a while back, that if the zombies came, if we could kill us a pig, we could split up the thyroid and keep ourselves going...)

Now, some folk need hi-zoot synth meds that can *only* be genned in a lab. That's gonna be hell.

No, if the fit hits the shan, find me. If it's only medium bad, look for me sommat west of where the old Monster used to be; if it's REALLY bad, and you miss catching me around here, head for Grants Pass, Oregon. Like Seanan said to.

Oh, and suggest learning to cook for yourself. It's a lot of fun, and healthier.

Cooking's not that hard...catching the rabbit's a pain. If I didn't know how to cook, I'd give myself two weeks.

(and, if you read the story, you'll see the IRS doesn't want to enforce it)

And won't be able to anyway, if the GOP gets their way. Seems to me I read somewhere they wanted to cut ~$100 million from the IRS's enforcement budget.

I heard a thing on the radio where in Ohio, the government is closing the majority of the physical offices for the tax agents, along with those jobs, because the majority of taxpayers (the report said 80%)now file on-line, and do not come in with questions or needing help. Agents had been sitting around waiting for someone to call in or come in so they could help.
