Tsunami warning issued for Japan after another quake hits. Richter 7.4, about 28 miles offshore. No details yet.

Fuck.

ETA: Revised down to 7.1. Still sucks.

I can't believe it. I was literally Facebook messaging with one of our friends there and she was freaking out a bit. They're saying that it was deeper than the other one, so the surface shockwave / tsunami shouldn't be as bad. We hope. Jeez, that's like saying getting shot with a .22 is better than a .38.

Mother Nature, lay off Japan right now, thank you very much.

You have to *expect* stuff like this after a quake that big. Fault lines will be readjusting for *years*.

Also, keep in mind that the Richter scale is *logarithmic*.

So a difference of 2 in the magnitude is a difference of *1000* in the energy released.

Nope. 1000 is correct. It's a weird sort of base ten log. 1.o difference is a factor of 31.6.

https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Richter_magnitude_scale
The energy release of an earthquake, which closely correlates to its destructive power, scales with the 32 power of the shaking amplitude. Thus, a difference in magnitude of 1.0 is equivalent to a factor of 31.6 ( = (101.0)(3 / 2)) in the energy released; a difference in magnitude of 2.0 is equivalent to a factor of 1000 ( = (102.0)(3 / 2) ) in the energy released.[2]

They just said on MSNBC that it was 7.1.

Not good, very not good... here's hoping the impact of this one is minimal.

So much for the probability of a magnitude 6 or above earthquake in the same area being 1 in million... something big is happening in that region is my guesstimate.

That was one of the problems right after the initial quake -- they were getting dozens of aftershocks of 6.0+.

From what I hear people saying this one wasn't as bad but once again the trains are shut down for a bit.

I'm currently listening to an English translated feed here:

Well it was an English translated feed. Right now it's showing an episode of Japanology about cranes. :-/

Ah, bugnuts. Not really a surprise, though; seismic activity does tend to continue for a while, in human terms.

I guess the bake sale tomorrow at my daughter's school to benefit Japan is doubly well timed, then.

Watch carefully, the ruins in other lands. Learn from their bones what succeeded and what failed. For one day, you will see the same thing in your own homeland.

Face it, they're going to be getting aftershocks like this for years. And that doesn't count the pace of normal earthquakes that come in every couple of years.

Was actually halfway awake for this one last night (Still jet lagged from FKO). It wasn't as long as the 9.0, but the main shock felt stronger. The video from some of the news offices that were open last night show things being thrown around more violently.
