Sheesh. Somebody needs to explain to a lot of folks that that phrase pretty much *convict* you of racism, or whatever other ism you are trying to defens yourself against.
It's unfortunate, but yeah, that line is often the first refuge of the caught-out bigot, though the variation I've heard most frequently is "some of my best friends are ____" (emphasis mine). Curiously, I've never MET any of the alleged _____ friends.
And even if they do exist, it harkens back to the old saw: If all men were brothers, would you still want one marrying your sister?
"Monkey" isn't a racial slur for white people, though. It is a racial slur for black people and in some interviews, the person who passed that image on made references to "Obama's origin."
If the W. pictures had compared him to a cracker, it would have been racist.
