Steve Jackson Games is working on a thorough overhaul and updating of its seminal board game Ogre. I've played it since the very first edition -- some paper in a plastic envelope, you had to cut apart the counters -- and I can't wait.

As a teaser, today's Daily Illuminator features a comparison shot of the original counter (about a half-inch square) to the You-Put-It-Together 3D beast from the new edition. (If you don't want to follow the links all the way through to their logical conclusion, here's a PDF sell sheet showing off the board and counters.)

Oh.

Yeah.

What board games haven't you played in awhile, that you should get back to? I noticed a fine layer of dust the other day on my copies of Nuclear War and Cosmic Encounter. And I know I've got the revised rules to Dragon Dice around here somewhere....

Ooh, fond memories of the time some friends drew a terrain map on a tabletop-sized sheet of hex paper, and the mixed the pieces from three or four sets -- I think it was two sets of Ogre and two of GEV; I do know that both sides had multiple Ogres and lots of other types of units -- and I got to play with that.

And yeah, we used to play Cosmic Encounter in the dorm.

Other than those, chess, Othello/Reversi, and backgammon, I haven't done all that much board gaming, and none at all recently. (I've also played a little go, pente, and mancala, but I never stuck with any of those for very long.)

I'm not too versed in board games, but I played Settlers of Catan with some friends once about a year or so ago. Friggin' loved it, and considered getting it, but I didn't want to drop the $30/$40 people wanted when I doubt I could wrangle enough people into playing.

Tried some digital versions, but they're just not as good. It's no fun when there's no one else to laugh immaturely over "I've got wood for your sheep". :(

Ogre Z-cards? Wish I'd thought of it.

I recently found a copy of Grass at my FLGS and decided to pick it up. My parents had a copy, and my little brother and I tried playing it when we were very young, but boy does it make a difference in your gaming experience when you're world-experienced enough to actually get all the jokes.

2012, 35 years of Fear and Loathing.

I managed to pick up a bunch of the original Ogre minis when I was a kid - there was a store in town that sold overstock and items from out of business stores and once they must have picked up an entire game store.

I got the original Ogre book, a couple of Mk III's, 2 Mk Vs, a load if infantry, and some other pocket games and a few of the book shelf SF games from Avalon Hill.

That was the best day of summer in my 14th year.

I'm hoping my girl friend's training on the embroidery machine where she works will allow her to make some Combine flash patches...

I really wish the 2nd GURPS OGRE book had come out.

I wish I had someone to play Chitin:I with, and that they'd published more games in that line.

I was looking at my husband's copy of Talisman thinking that it's been a while since we played that. Although I think I prefer Dungeon Quest (I think that was the name).

I haven't played Cosmic Encounter in 20 years . . . the dust layer is very thick. Got some new friends coming over for the first time this weekend--thinking of teaching them Settlers. [livejournal.com profile] wingus -- don't suppose you're anywhere near Delaware/Philly? We're always up for a game . . . .

Battletech! Giant robots, heat buildups, Particle Projection Cannons... good times. I ordered the boxed set a little while ago; now I just need to track down some of the "unseen" minis, and get my gaming group to join in.

It's been a while since I got out Caylus (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/18602/caylus), Cosmic Encounter (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/40529/cosmic-encounter), or Revolution (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/34887/revolution); still haven't had a chance to play Pandemic (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/30549/pandemic).

The new edition of Ogre looks nice, but I dunno about the practicalities of actually setting up a game at that scale.

It's a room-eater, no doubt. Reminds me of some of the big honkin' SPI games, e.g., Terrible Swift Sword and Campaign For North Africa -- you remember, the ones with thirty square feet of maps and four thousand counters.

Okay, not really. But it does remind me of Avalon Hill's The Longest Day. Yeah, that's about the right scope.

I'd really like to play Titan again, haven't played that in over a decade. Need at least three people but four or five is better. These days I'm lucky to get one other gamer to play with. SPANC is another one I haven't played in so long I've forgotten all the rules.

I'd love to find and play GDW's Third World War series (http://boardgamegeek.com/wiki/page/Third_World_War_series) again. Set up all four games with four players per side playing theater commanders. Order pizza, ravage the world.

Ogre though.. years ago I had drawn Staff Duty Runner at battalion headquarters and brought my copy of Ogre since I knew the Sergeant doing SDNCO that night also played. Our battalion commander was working late, came out and saw us playing. We taught him the rules, and I proceeded to destroy him. On both sides of the scenario.

I need to get Talisman out. I have both the 2nd and 4th editions (the 4th is surprisingly good, especially with the updates).

That and Robo Rally, which I suck at.

Ah yes, Cosmic Encounter, the game you cannot physically PLAY if you use all the supplements. :) I was at a gaming convention when it came out (forget which one) and all over the con you saw groups of people playing it.

There's Clue, which is kinda fun even in the standard version. I occasionally ran mutant versions in Intercepted; there was always a Colonel Mustard, but otherwise we took characters from various story threads going on in the 'zine at the time, also weapons and places. Which last tended to shift positions randomly every few moves. The result was a hoot.

I miss me some Battletech. I've got two or three unseen Warhammers sitting on my radio gear, waiting for the day they can walk the field of battle again.

Oooh, nice!

I've been trying to find a Warhammer and a Marauder to go along with the intro boxed set (the new one is pretty comprehensive, but no WAR or MAD, and the Reseen models look like arse, to put it politely).

I was a latecomer to games: I didn't get involved with them until college. But my first experience with them was a game called Ogre, introduced to me by a guy named Dwayne in the common room of my freshman dorm. I bought that, GEV, Shockwave, and the Reinforcement Pack as they came out, along with Melee, Wizard, Star Fleet Battles and, of course, various RPGs. And I actually have played Ogre in the past year (introduced it to the young pups I work with).
