Steve Jackson Games is working on a thorough overhaul and updating of its seminal board game Ogre. I've played it since the very first edition -- some paper in a plastic envelope, you had to cut apart the counters -- and I can't wait.

As a teaser, today's Daily Illuminator features a comparison shot of the original counter (about a half-inch square) to the You-Put-It-Together 3D beast from the new edition. (If you don't want to follow the links all the way through to their logical conclusion, here's a PDF sell sheet showing off the board and counters.)

Oh.

Yeah.

What board games haven't you played in awhile, that you should get back to? I noticed a fine layer of dust the other day on my copies of Nuclear War and Cosmic Encounter. And I know I've got the revised rules to Dragon Dice around here somewhere....

Ooh, fond memories of the time some friends drew a terrain map on a tabletop-sized sheet of hex paper, and the mixed the pieces from three or four sets -- I think it was two sets of Ogre and two of GEV; I do know that both sides had multiple Ogres and lots of other types of units -- and I got to play with that.

And yeah, we used to play Cosmic Encounter in the dorm.

Other than those, chess, Othello/Reversi, and backgammon, I haven't done all that much board gaming, and none at all recently. (I've also played a little go, pente, and mancala, but I never stuck with any of those for very long.)
