On Michigan's brand new "financial martial law".

For more background, go here, here and here. Short form: Unwanted and frickin' expensive shorefront development is in, democracy is out. Literally.

Yes, the great corporate Anschluss is upon us.

I actually went and lobbied my state representative against this law as part of one of the Union organized events. I had a personal discussion with him for all the good it did. (Aric Nesbitt)

I'm suprised that there hasn't been a challenge to the constitutionality of this travesty of a law.

There probably will be, very soon. But it's caught everyone flat-footed.

Aren't you in Michigan, Tom? What's the word on the street about this? It sounds like the most horribly anti-democratic thing I can think of.

That's why I put the dKos links up there -- they're about the best sources for activist chatter I have right now. The short form is, as usual, it's split along party lines. Repubs are about-time-if-they-can't-manage-their-money, Dems are what-the-hell-is-wrong-with-this-picture, and local politicos (including Mayor Bing of Detroit) are scrambling to avoid having their booms lowered but don't know what exactly will stop it. I'd be much happier if the Freep or Detroit News came out against this, or if some other local leaders made a big stink.

Fair ends or foul, I can't say I care for the precedent this sets.

Setting aside votes, cancelling elections, taking over cities? Nah, neither can I.

I think I've figured it out - "small government" is code for "I run everything". This needs to be stomped on quickly - what ARE they teaching in history class these days?
