Okay, as bad as the situation is, that commercial was seriously funny.

I'm with Cacti at Balloon Juice on this one: "'If we end Medicare, sitcom style hijinks will ensue' is a complete turkey of a message."

Speaking as someone with a heavy background in discourse analytics, visual design, and rhetoric, you know what this ad says to me? That the people who put it together don't think this is a serious issue and they can get away with the cute and funny treatment. Reminds me a little bit of looking at the new USPS "Green" stamps with my publisher today; they're a joke. Bad art, cutesy, completely trivial, and another great way of subliminally convincing Americans that an actually important issue is trivial and those unserious children who care about it need to grow up.

Now, if they wanted to make a serious pro-Medicare ad that would move some votes, they should be taking lessons from stuff like the Daisy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63h_v6uf0Ao) ad.

So I guess the thousands and thousands I put into the Medicare system for the past 22 years will go to buy more 'splosions.
