Sometime over the next several hours, you will hear the world's loudest SQUEEEEEE from out California way.

That's because our darling, [personal profile] seanan_mcguire, has been nominated for a Hugo award in the Best Novel category with her pseudonymous Feed (by "Mira Grant").

There are a number of our friends in there this year, including the Foglios, Howard Tayler, and Steven Silver. And, of course, Lois McMaster Bujold, Mike Resnick, Allan Steele, just a great year.

The full list is posted on the RenoVation site.

Your thoughts on the nominees?

I'm happy Feed by Mira Grant was nominated. I'm currently reading it and its terrific.

I'm a little bemused and puzzled by the nom for "Fuck Me Ray Bradbury". Not quite sure what I think about it.

Over all its a fine list, but man, I wish people would get out of the print fanzine mindset when nominated fan artists.

I find myself wondering exactly HOW big the wankstorm will be if Randall Munroe wins the category.

I won't be eligible to vote this year, so I don't know how many nominees I'll read or watch.

Feed is the only fiction nominee I've read, and it deserves the nom.

In Dramatic Presentation: Long Form, I've seen all of them except Scott Pilgrim (I do have a DVD, but haven't gotten to it yet), and my choice would be Inception.

In DP: Short Form, "Fuck Me, Ray Bradbury" is an OK joke, but hardly deserving of nomination. I haven't yet seen "The Lost Thing". Of the three Doctor Who episodes, I think "The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang" is clearly the best. (Hell, just watching the recap last night before the season opener, I choked up a little at "Raggedy man, I remember you, and you are LATE for my WEDDING!")

I'm currently halfway through the Heinlein biography that was nominated in Related Work, and liking it a lot.

Graphic Story is tough. Much as I love Girl Genius, Phil and Kaja have won two years in a row now, and I'd like to see Willingham and Buckingham get some recognition for their work on Fables. And Unwritten is also very good. I haven't read Grandville, Mon Amour, and given that it's Bryan Talbot, it might just blow me away.

For various reasons, I was way behind on Doctor Who. I just saw the double ep yesterday. It was astonishing. And I loved the bit you invoke. :D

"The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms" is excellent, and Nora Jemisin deserves her nomination for it. The Best Novel slate is a very tough one this year.

Don't forget that Seanan has a piece in the also-nominated Chicks Dig Time Lords (Best Related Work).

My comment to [livejournal.com profile] gridlore as I was reading the list earlier: "Oh, look! [livejournal.com profile] johnnyeponymous has two more to lose!" (Chris Garcia, nominated for both Best Fan Writer and The Drink Tank as Best Fanzine) When relaying this to Chris on Twitter, he informed us that they're better to lose in pairs. ;-)

My first thought is that I'll have an easy time getting through the Best Novel nominees. I've already read three of the five (Mira, Lois and Connie).

My second thought is that I might just attend the Hugos for the first time in 16 Worldcons.

Con culture is wonderful. You never know who that person you're talking to is.

Just yesterday at Norwescon I met an intelligent woman named Mary Robinette Kowal who does theater and sci fi, and who did a reading (with puppets) from her not yet finished or sold first novel ...and today, there she is on the Hugo list for a short story! I had no idea.

Oh, cool. I was at the reading (and the con) too! And yeah, she's a wonderful lady. (She's also the vice president of the SFWA; she's not exactly a newcomer here. :D)

The puppet bit was from Shades of Milk and Honey, which was published a few months ago; it's a Regency fantasy. The rest of the reading was from a work in progress called, I believe, The Transfigured Lady.

That's true...there was a bit from the story and a bit from the novel.

I should maybe have said *I* never know who I'm talking to...my involvement is pretty incidental to filking, and some big names aren't familiar to me until long after other fans have set up cult followings. I also met Jim Butcher, and no idea until later what a popular series Dresden Files is. I'll have to go looking for those now...

I was mentioning Seanan's nomination at dinner last night and one of my nephews asked why she wrote under a different name. Although the correct answer is that it's a different genre and she's trying to keep them separate, it might just as well be she's talented enough for two people. (At least.)

It's a strong field. Haven't read any of the novels except Feed (which was excellent even though I don't normally read horror).

It's an honor for Seanan, but I'm all about Cryoburn. I thought that was a truly phenomenal book.

I need to read more of the shorts before I know which one I prefer. (Though since I'm unlikely to have a voting ability, it's not like my preferences matter. :)

Awesome! I hadn't read the list, so I hadn't heard before.

I OWN Cryoburn... guess I'd better read it RSN. I did love Feed mightily.
