Last night was the 2011 Tony awards broadcast. The winners are listed here.

But that's not what you want to know about.

What you want to know is, did anything really cool happen with host Neil Patrick Harris and Hugh Jackman?

Did Dan Radcliffe and John Laroquette rock the house singing "Brotherhood of Man"?

Did the opening number blow away... erm... I mean, impress the heck out of everybody?

Did NPH sum up the show in an ass-kicking rap?

And, will there be Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark jokes? Stay tuned. I've gotta find a video li- I mean... maybe.

I'll tell you this: NPH and Hugh Jackman can pretty much do anything.

Thoughts?

ETA: For those interested, Amazon is having a sale right now on The Book Of Mormon [Explicit] [+Digital Booklet] -- only $1.99. And they're having a general sale on show tunes as well, with lots of Broadway cast recordings for five bucks each.

What I really want to know is, who wore the best/worst gowns?

I can tell you one thing: Frances McDormand was worst-dressed. GOOD LORD.

One I loved: Catherine Zeta-Jones. Beautiful red gown was cut well, flattered her, and looked good (and provocative!) from all angles.

One I hated: The woman who was part of the group who came up to accept the Best Musical award for The Book of Mormon. [livejournal.com profile] maya_a described it accurately as "a Muppet in mourning", all black with a black feather skirt that did negative things for the lady wearing it.

I don't visit Go Fug Yourself as often nowadays as I used to, but I'm always amused by their snark.

This was a year where I didn't know much about any of the shows, and it was STILL vastly entertaining. I bought the cast album for Book of Mormon last night, because that number was one of the funniest things I've seen on the Tonys since Avenue Q. And Sutton Foster is a goddess. My only complaint is that I wish they were doing scenes from plays still. I would've liked to have seen more of War Horse and The Motherf*cker with the Hat.

Two things:

1. Who scheduled this opposite the Schadenfreude Event of the Year (i.e., Lebron James has his butt beaten and the Dallas Mavericks take the NBA Championship)?

and 2. Per my FB FL, who authorized a street fair directly outside the Beacon Theatre (currently the best venue to see an event in NYC) on the day the Tonys were to be awarded there?

Okay, three:

3. I'm really happy to see Daniel Radcliffe avoid typecasting, and be a very long way down the road of proving he's a real actor. Add How to Succeed... to his prior stage stints (e.g., Equus), and this is clearly a man who's passionate about his craft, and quite good at it. (Well, his voice is only okay, but he can HOOF it!)

(The usericon isn't really the right sentiment, but it's my only NPH.)

These were the best (or at least most entertaining) Tonys in *YEARS* - I loved just about every number. Though I did think that 'Brotherhood of Man' utterly and thoroughly stole the show....

(And yeah, I maybe sorta kinda need to go see 'Book of Mormon' if and when it ever goes on tour. That was... something. I'm still not sure what, but definitely something.)

I have LOVED How to Succeed in Business since I was 8 years old and found my parents' Original Broadway Soundtrack LP. I really want to see this version.

I loved the Tonys last night. It's the only awards show I actually watch. NPH was great. I laughed... I need to get the Book of Mormon soundtrack. (I was told that a month ago, but now I need to do it for sure.)

I also LOVE Sutton Foster. She's amazing. Just wow.

Daniel Radcliffe is short.

I won't buy from Amazon. But I'll stop by B&N later if I can leave my house and breathe at the same time. (Or I'll buy from them online... we'll see.) I'll own it soon enough.

Fantastic show, from beginning to end.

You're making some work for me, here. Now I have to check the list of sale downloads against the musicals I already have on CD (which is most of them), so I can just buy the ones I don't have. A quick tip to everyone: If you want a copy of "Fiddler on the Roof" (and who doesn't), go for the original Broadway cast with Zero Mostel, not the recent revival with Alfred Molina.

I got to see Harvey Fierstein as Tevye on tour (last year?), and OH, he was glorious.

Edited 'cause it's Monday morning and I can't brain yet.

Same caveat WRT "1776". The original Broadway cast recording with William Daniels is fantastic. The re-release with Brent Spiner... not so much. Spiner is the only one among the leading actors who can actually sing. If you want that version for collector value, of course, that's a different issue.

Quick note: Amazon has some of its labels wrong. The Kiss Me Kate soundtrack, which they label as "Original Broadway Cast", is in fact the film soundtrack with Ann Miller and Howard Keel. It's cool and fun, but NOT the same as the Broadway album -- the songs are out of order, and of course, the singers are different. I suspect some number of similar missteps on Amazon's part throughout.

But the movie cast album is far superior to the stage album

I've never heard the original stage album. However, I've moved strongly over toward the stage versions of the songs from the (relatively) recent revival (of which a version from London in 2002 is available). Granted, Brent Barry is no Howard Keel -- but overall, the cast is superb, and I think that I strongly prefer the songs in the stage order, rather than the film's.

Actors who can sing *and* dance? Goes back to a time when they were actually worth something. I loved it! Well done, gentlemen!

My take-aways from the Tonys were a bit more personal:

(1) I need to see more live shows. Luckily, I am in Chicago; Carrie Fisher's one woman show, and Colin Quinn's one man show, are both coming through this year. And I'll at least see "Company" this week at the movies.
(2) Wow, am I out of shape. I couldn't do the first 5 seconds of most of those routines without collapsing to the ground in a puddle.

It was an excellent show this year. Loved the opening song, despite Brooke Shields but she did have it thrust on her at the last minute.

The bit with Jackman was great. All the routines from the musicals were great EXCEPT the Spider-man one. Gad, what a freakin dull song.

I personally wouldn't care if McDormand wore a paper bag on stage. Her acting rules. And there's a bucketload more shows I now wanta see/read/be in...:)

I must echo joecoustic. Different morning, still fabulous. Wow. I heart NPH. He and Hugh Jackman have some nice chemistry, too. We have been listening to Book of Mormon all week (when the kids aren't around).
