Personally I think that Weiner should resign, but then so should David Vitter and Mark Sanford. All three violated the public trust, though to be fair they did so in varrying degrees.
He should not resign. He has done nothing to wrong the public. He flirted online with an apparently willing participant (if he was just randomly emailing his junk to unsuspecting women it would be different.)
When asked impertinent questions about his private life he told a white lie. (NOT under oath)
Anything else is between his and his wife.
Unless we want to just hand the keys to the county over to the religious right, he MUST stick this out. Otherwise, we let the most restrictive set of rules possible govern the standards for our leader's personal lifes.
I think Weiner would probably win. Unless one of the local up and comers has a hidden war chest. New Yorkers, for all our supposed independence, are creatures of political habit. I would not kick him out over this, but as noted before, I wanted someone better before this.
The question is really, when would we have a special election? My assemblywoman resigned in February, and there is no election scheduled yet. No one seems to know why. (I wonder: if I don't have either a congressman or an assemblyman, is that a case of taxation without representation?)
