For reasons of sheer distraction, I have not mentioned anything about this year's WorldCon in Reno, NV. No, I am not there, but a whole bunch of our friends are, and I hope they're all having a wonderful time. If anyone there would like to either post a con report here or link to your own, go right ahead.

As for the rest of us, well, I'm making Dutch-oven pulled pork today, and working on another Commission That Would Not Die. If I can finish that one, I've got four more in the queue. It's gonna be a busy week. How's by you?

Well, we're here.

Though I'm having the usual issues of not seeing too much of the con while tracking kids. Next time BOTH will have phones. It's generally nice; lots of interesting tracks, lots of friends, but nobody will EVER get me to a con in Nevada again. There's just too much smoke, which for me is a constant low-level irritation. Water bottles for everyone was nice, though. Is that standard anymore? Small but lively filk last night. It was getting its second wind, I think, when I petered out around 1.

I'm having an excellent time in Reno! Great panels, great parties, seeing old friends, making some new ones...yay!

It has been 5 years since I was last able to attend. I'm ecstatic!

My pulled pork is in the crock pot coincidentally.

If I were the sort to invite myself to dinner I'd be on my way over. :-)

And if I didn't have a bunch of stuff to do, including clean the dang house, I'd invite you over. :) I'm planning at least one or two parties this fall, and you'll be on The List.

Thanks. I promise I wasn't fishing.

I've got a conference in mid November (Orlando), so I'm not sure if I'll have the time to do my annual Thanksgiving weekend blowout this year. If I can get the house sufficiently clean before the conference I will.

Sadly, I'll have to decline that one before I even get invited -- I'm Toastmaster at ChamBanaCon (http://chambanacon.org/index.php) this Thanksgiving.

"Toastmaster," eh? Wheat, white, rye, sourdough, pumpernickel? Butter, marmalade, or preserves?

Looks like I'll have to get off my butt and actually GO to ChamBanaCon this year :) (As opposed to buying a membership and then staying home with the flu.)

Reno has the first 5 newsletters on the main page. I have seen a few LJ (and facebook) posts about the con, but not much in the past day or two.

I would guess that Texas won the worldcon site selection (but that is a given since they were running unopposed.)

As for the weekend, relaxing a bit, then going into a bit busy of a week with time off post Pi-Con next weekend.

Running unopposed is no guarantee of winning. Just ask Oregon. :-(

They were not supposed to be running unopposed. Did something happen to the Zagreb in 2013 bid?

Decided to put in a shift at the food bank and see who was there on Saturdays as opposed to during the week. I did it once earlier and we had so many volunteers that we were almost falling over each other. Not so today. But the shift was longer than I expected and I am exhausted. It went well and I got to take home a bag of brussel sprouts no one else wanted. (Cut in half and fry until GBD, that's Good Eats.)

I've also been doing work for a previous employer. I've been trying to fix a program that's 4000+ lines of code that's very hard to follow. I've had some success so far, but it's going to take more work to figure out what's really wrong.

Gotta group event in City of Heroes then I may go to the local sci-fi party but I'm pretty tired and I still have my chores to do Sunday. Weekends should be for resting.

We've run it twice now, once at Baycon, and on Thursday night here at WorldCon. It looks like it will be running at Convolution in San Francisco, November 2012, and probably at a few other West Coast cons. A couple folks have asked us to do Midwest and East Coast runs, but there's no way we can afford that.

Spent day brousing the Asian market. Came home w/some squashes (so ready for fall) for risotto, a boba drink, and a stuffed Totoro. Then I glued a new side view mirror to the Way Back Machine because it had heat-induced failure. Have I mentioned I'm ready for fall?

This afternoon, a little housecleaning & anime.

EDIT: Reality - big headache & a nap.

1 p.m. in my time zone, and I've already had my standard Saturday morning long bath with a book (this week it's The Sheep Look Up, by John Brunner; very high recommendations), made the grass shrink, watered all the vegetables, went shopping, made a tasty stew, got Twofoot dressed and under supervision until the rest of the house wakes up, and am online to check on my friends.

Later on, I need to record a song, to the tune of one of yours, actually, meet with my friend Bigfoot Dave to work on different songs, and maybe have time to take the tot for a swim.

This is what's called "getting a rest before you have to go back to work Monday."

I am an individual with a respiratory disability. Bronchial asthma. I'm extremely sensitive to ETS. The filk area is up an escalator from a smoke-filled casino. I spent some time there Tuesday night, got dreadfully sick, and haven't been back. I've also spent very little time at parties. The Atlantis is only slightly better, but there is still smoke throught the non-smoking floors due to lack of separate ventilation and shared elevators. So, in short, Reno is a stinking hellhole and I'm extremely disappointed. I am very angry that they called these smoky areas "non- smoking" on the website and downplayed how smoky everything is in the 2 hotels.

Yeah, I was worried that that was going to be a big problem. Hasn't been as bad for me as it was the last time I was here in Reno, but it's not good either. Nevada sort of sucks.

On the other hand, it's been a great con for freebies. A fan who died this year, Diana Barbour, willed a large book collection to be given away to fans at Worldcon. They put out 42 large boxes of books over 4 days, one box at a time, to give everyone a chance. I got a couple of rare signed Philip Jose Farmer Essex House paperbacks. Subterranean has also been putting out freebies, including high-cover-price hardcovers of Farmer and PK Dick. Also, the concerts have been great, and all but one of them was in the convention center, which is smoke-free. I bought a plush roadkill mongoose with a tire track today and wore it over my shoulder most of the day. So, I'm having some fun. BUT I'm staying at the smoke-free marriott, which has no shuttle, and spending a fortune on taxis. With tip, about $10 each way. I've walked it quite a few times, but it's about 30 minutes, and about 10 minutes to walk to a bus stop, so when I take a guitar, it's $20 roundtrip because there's no instrument storage at the con.

Spent the day car shopping. Still need to check out a few Toyota models tomorrow, but we're about 90% decided. We already know we like the Prius, but the covered cargo space is way too small for our needs, and there's still no ETA for the new Prius wagon. Cue Animal: "Need car! Need car NOW!"

Lizzie and I are home this weekend with very little to do. It's marvelous. We're shuffling boxes and cartons around the house and trying to make it into something that resembles a house. We set up tents in the back yard so they can air out getting ready for camping in two weeks.

And next weekend Cheshire Moon plays it's second show.

As for me,

the sport cute (2002 Honda CR-V) needed to be taken in for the 60000 mile routine maintenance. That's right, 60000 miles in just under 9 years. Also found out that over the next two years, there are the every 10-year preventative maintenance things to do (all the hoses and then the water pump). At the rate I've been driving, those 2 repairs will happen over the next 18 months and will run me a total of $1,000. That said, they will make the car last another 10 years.

Last night was Middle Earth Rocketry Club. Tonight, probably Meskerem with [livejournal.com profile] thatcrazycajun and his songbird.
