And, yes, of course I know that it was scripted, that it wasn't really a state representative, etc., etc. But this scene aired in 1992. Funny how I keep hearing the same tired, useless arguments from the same tired, useless politicians... and their "new generation" of mouthpieces brought up to (not necessarily believe in but certainly and skillfully) sell this tripe.

You might be interested in this, Tom. It's Brian McNeill's "No Gods and Precious Few Heroes." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Evfk0iEwhM) It's mostly a slam against Scottish independence but there's some lyrics in it that are applicable to the other side of the pond. (If you search for a better version, Dick Gaughan's version is more audible but it lacks the energy of McNeill's; McNeill also wrote the original song.)

Honestly that clip could have been made today. It is a sad state of affairs that we find ourselves in. We're seeing an all out assault on the right to unionize and more and more pressure being put on the middleclass. Not only that, we're also seeing a push for regressive taxation in things like the call by some republicans for a consumption tax or national sales tax while they also push for more and more tax breaks for corporations that send jobs overseas.

The problem that I forsee is that the Dems seem to be more interested in appeasement and compromise than they are in helping the middleclass. I didn't always agree with the bombastic ways that guys like Alan Grayson talked but at least they stood up for what they believed in.

We need more firebrands who will do the work of the people and not always cowtowing to big business.

Like I've said before, government CANNOT create net jobs, every attempt to do so costs jobs.
All government "jobs" programs do is take money from people who would spend it on what they want (creating jobs that are useful) and give it (with middle-man collection and distribution and regulation costs) to people doing stuff that the populace doesn't really want - or it would have been done already.

The existing government bureaucracies for food and drug safety have prevented more efficient and responsive private certification companies from arising, along the lines of UL for electrical products.
