I was blessed to have very little emotional aftereffect from the original event, and I really don't care about baseball.
So please help me ensure I heard Keith's rant correctly: What he's objecting to is that MLB has been making commemorative ballcaps for sale each year, and are forcing the players to wear those instead of something possibly more meaningful to them - or potentially to the audience?
I'm totally okay with being disgusted by such a practice (though again since I don't care much about baseball it makes me fret that Keith's gonna be seen as someone who didn't have something better to rant about). I just want to make sure I'm gonna be disgusted for the right reason. =)
Keith has plenty to rant about, and does. Remember that he basically made his name as a sports announcer (co-anchoring ESPN's SportsCenter in its formative years), and is still a serious sports fan, especially of baseball. (He has a blog called Baseball Nerd.) I wouldn't worry about his reputation being sullied or twisted, in that regard.
What gets me about the whole fooforaw is that the man who either made or contributed to the decision, and is charged with enforcing it, is Joe Torre, who was the manager of the New York Yankees in 2001, and who should know better.
I hate this kind of enforced celebration. It cheapens everyone. It reminds me of the Pledge of Allegiance and how the courts ruled that schools can't make students say it. But it's different for an employer. One advantage though is you won't have as much "more patriotic than thou" attitudes on the lower end of the spectrum.
The way I read Keith's original BBNerd column (from which the above SC came), it sounded more like Torre was a convenient scapegoat. If he really WAS the driving force behind this, then I've lost respect for him. (And as a Giants fan, I have/had more respect for the man than the media would have you believe.)
I think he was on the spot, but I'd respect him a great deal more had he spoken out in favor of the Mets. Considering his tenure in New York, and his stature in the game (if it came to a popularity contest with the Commissioner, Torre would kill him in the papers), he's the person I'd have hoped would get on his hind legs and stand up to the Bully In Charge.
