"Researchers have discovered that if they eliminate a cholesterol membrane surrounding the virus, HIV cannot disrupt communication among disease-fighting cells and the immune system returns to normal.

Read all of it -- it's not a long article. But it fills me with hope. Because it sounds like one of those, "-- oh, jeez! That's what it's doing! We can deal with that!" breakthroughs.

Fuck. Yeah.

What gets me is that part of the AIDS puzzle was solved by ... gamers. (Isn't that, like, the plot of an 80s movie?)

Which means that, for the rest of recorded time, kids have a ready answer for when their parents snap about what damn good all that stupid game-playing does in real life.

That's awesome. I didn't notice that in the article - do you have a link to the details? I'd love to see how that worked!

One can only hope that this is the major breakthrough to a cure, and tat it will lead to better understanding - and a cure - for other diseases of the immune system, including things like MS, allergies, etc.

Thanks for the good news. Maybe one day AIDS will be a memory, as polio is now.

Well, a memory in this country. There are still plenty of places where (for a multitude of reasons, many of them variations on "People suck") it is still a Thing...albeit perhaps less of one than it used to be!

Got the article as a pdf. Bug me if you want a copy (as it's not free and I had to go through my school to get it). Time to digest!

It sounds good, but if I had a dollar for every time I'd heard about something this preliminary that sounded good, I'd be heading to a few more cons this season. So of course I'm hopeful, but I'm not going to invest much excitement in it until I hear that it worked in a human.

Excellent. Get this working in a human. Find something to deal with herpes. Reliable chemical birth control for men is already coming down the pipe.

Then we can start up Free Love again.
