At the age of 92. Condolences to his friends and family.

In the spirit of his commentaries, kindly let us in on your weekend plans (finishing up two projects and getting them in the mail), or what you plan to cook (I have to use some pork blade chops, gee, I think it's pulled pork time), or what's the last movie or three you saw (X-Men: First Class, Captain America, and the animated Batman: Year One, all of which kicked major ass and which I commend to you highly). Or any damn thing.

I don't know if this is appropriate or not, but when I heard he passed away, this clip from the 80s crossed my mind...

He did! Not the first time I've seen that. The legendary football coach Bear Bryant lasted less than a month after his retirement. Andy, just a bit more.

My weekend? I'm going to go protest the snot out of the banksters this morning, and then this evening, go celebrate the opening of the new Wayward Coffeehouse (WAHOOOO!) with Vixy and Tony...

This is the weekend that the apartment has to come together, cleaned & organized, as there is company coming next week. It's not glamorous work, but it needs to be done and there is a feeling of accomplishment.

As far as entertainment, I've been watching Black Butler (disturbing), Ouran High School Host Club (funny), and will maybe watch the Cowboy Bebop Movie this weekend.

Black Butler is indeed disturbing and more than a little insane, although I came to love it during Season 2, which builds on all the what-the-fuckery of S1 with an intricate, marvelous plot with great characters. OHSHC, both anime and live-action, is a hoot and a half. And I really should get back to Cowboy Bebop.

Anne and I are watching 07-Ghost (intriguing, although not what it seemed it would be given the first ep) and Nodame Cantabile (largely adorable and funny, except for all the hitting, which I understand is a part of what many people feel is contemporary comedy, but it was never my favorite part of the Three Stooges either).

I'm planning on making a three sisters soup-- it's a three sisters soup if it's got beans, corn, and squash, primary foods from this continent.

I'll be adding chicken, hot peppers, and tomatoes. If I were gung ho about the continent thing, it would be turkey rather than chicken.

I'm also planning on seeing Tower Heist.

Gonna go get a haircut later, my DnD campaign's gonna pick up again tonight after a hiatus of a few months...at a rather awkward point, if I recall correctly. (Related, I found the first trade hardback of the first several issues of IDW's DnD comic - surprisingly awesome stuff, especially since they turned pivotal scenes in the book into mini-modules in the back with fake covers!) Also starting binging Kamen Rider Den-O as well.

I am in the midst of applying to Scarily Posh Institution (TM) for postdoc fellowships, and so am angsting long and hard over my research proposal. (Key element: speak of PhD diss as if it were already complete, as opposed to scattered so far and wide that writing it is like a scavenger hunt in my brain.) I'd watch the bonfire night fireworks, but they were last night. Also did some boring errands.

The last film I saw might have been Arietty, which was excellent. Before that I think were Captain America and X-Men: First Class, to which I was late in coming, but they were awesome. :)

Behold the power of caffeine!

I'm going to see Art Fight in DC tonight, and MC Frontalot in Baltimore tomorrow...

On top of that, I also managed to do the laundry and a bunch of other around the house chore-stuff.

That extra hour we're getting this weekend is really going to come in handy for sleeping purposes. ;-)

Ooh. Pulled pork sounds yummy.

I'm going to finish cleaning up my garden, save for those petunias that REFUSE to give up, repot my parsley to bring inside, and plant a whole bunch of tulip and hyacinth bulbs before it's too late.

Oh, and there's a kitchen around here somewhere. I probably should find it...

Oh--and there's homework to do (this online college thing is awesome), and a birthday cake to bake for The Bimmer, who turns ten tomorrow. The last of my babies is growing up in a hurry!

I'm currently watching The Goonies, and Rocky Horror Picture Show is on the agenda for the day. I'm blaming CraigyFerg and Amanda Palmer.

This afternoon I shall go here and consume unreasonable amounts of the world's best Dutch sausage and sauerkraut (this event has been going on for better than 3/4 of a century, and they hand-make several tons of sausage every year nowadays to meet the demand). And I will undoubtedly put a dollar down on the annual quilt raffle.

Three years ago or so now, they had a suggestion box at the T-shirt sale table in which one could submit suggested slogans for future T-shirts; I dropped one in the box, and darn if it didn't show up on the subsequent year's T-shirts. (My nomination was: "Kraut Happens".)

When I saw the news, I could only think of the skit MST3K did where Mike, Crow, and Tom had a contest about who could impersonate him the best on the subject of soup. "Soup is funny."

I'm going to the 3rd annual Wheaton Chili Cook Off today. $10 for all the chili you can eat at 12 different places. I forgot to go last year. The first year there were just 6 places (my favorite did not win). I hope to get through all of them with at least one working taste bud.

Tomorrow is the second DucKon meeting so I hope to put more info on the site.

I'm also looking for a new "guild" to join in City of Heroes. I'm tired of my current group showing up late to events and generally treating our time like a CEO treats the employee pension fund (something to waste without caring who's affected). I guess I'm in the wrong when I complain when someone not only shows up late, but doesn't apologize then expects us to wait more because they weren't ready.

This is my last week under my current contract. It ended sooner than expected because we were so far ahead of schedule there was no work left to do and the budget got cut so some future projects got canceled. It's a pity but strangely I'm looking forward to the break. I also have to plan for what I'm doing at Windy next weekend.

I also got my Thanksgiving dinner assignment, a dip that people can add hot sauce to. I'm planning on my corn salsa (with and without thai chili peppers) and a maybe tofu/sour cream herb dip (so people can add heat without the lingering effects). I have time so this should be fun.

Tonight I'll likely be playing Deadlands at a friends house and tomorrow running my Pathfinder campaign. Should be fun :)

Last movies I saw were X-Men First Class and Captain America, and I just got the dvds for both. Now I just need to get Thor and I'll be set.

I can imagine 5-minute segments:

Andy Rooney on death. "My arthritis is a lot better now."

Andy Rooney on funerals. "Where's the light switch down here? Is the camera on?"

Andy Rooney on Heaven: "Why won't this harp play Gb? I never liked harp music. Why can't I have a Stratocaster?"

He made complaining an art form, and I respect that.

Today, I did my pill-counting for the next 5 weeks, I'm working on laundry, scanning some stuff to sell on eBay, watching Stargate SG1 on DVD (I'm in the middle of season 4), and tonight I have a ticket for the Austin Lounge Lizards.

I worked today but am done now. I'm going to write for NaNo tonight and tomorrow. My plan is to finally finish developmental edits on POWER IN THE BLOOD, my vampire apocalypse novel (coming Jan 8 from Storm Moon Press!).

Tomorrow will be groceries and laundry, as it always is on Sunday. I may go to a write in. My oldest is arriving early tomorrow morning to commandeer my bed for a few hours before continuing on to Kansas City to loot her grandmother's apartment. (Mom is moving in with my sister and is giving my daughter most of her furniture)

I'm making Mexican Chicken casserole tonight: cream of mushroom soup, cream of chicken soup, rotel tomatoes and shredded chicken layered between tortilla chips with cheese on to.

Last movies: Flakes, Let's Make Love and Drool. I recommend Flakes as a slacker comedy (watch for the cutting on the ordering scene, the boys look like gunfighters!). Drool is interesting, but disapproves of heterosexuality. (which is fine, because I do too) Let's Make Love could not hold my interest and I turned it off after an hour.

Hope your pulled pork turns out.

Why do I not have a hamster wheel icon?

I'm at a relaxocon. Why do they call it a relaxocon? I'm not relaxed. I'm losing money being here because there's so few people and even less money. What's relaxing about that? Why is a con relaxing when there's only a few people attending, all of whom spent their last dime to get through the door in the first place? They ought to call it a Look-at-Your-Bank-Balance-and-Get-Really-Uptight-Con.

But I admit that's unfair to most convention attendees, who are not dealers. Still, there ought to be a name for this kind of of con that's more truth in advertising. Something like, "We're-All-Broke-o-Con," or, "We're-Going-To-Prove-You-Can-Have-Fun-Without-Any-Money-o-Con."

There's a shorter name for that sort of thing, but "anime con" is already taken.
