Pain

A week and a half ago, I went to the dentist to have her look at a tooth which needs some work. It was slightly infected, and I said I usually take the antibiotic ciproflaxin.

She said, no no, clindamycin is much better for teeth.

About four days ago, I began to have extreme pain in my left hip, which hasn't been too great for the past few years anyway, but I mean extreme -- paralyzing, take-my-breath-away pain, with muscle spasms that brought tears to my eyes.

Did I say brought? Bring.

Clindamycin lists, among its potential side effects less frequent urination (which I had, and gained a few pounds in water weight, thanks so much) and joint pain. And even though I felt some better yesterday, and even better today, I went out for an errand and by the time I got there I couldn't get out of the van. Driving was awful. I barely made it back inside the house.

(According to those symptoms, it may be bursitis. I don't think it's a stress fracture of my hip -- I don't think that would subside for hours at a time.)

I see my doctor Tuesday. Please hope she can do something for me, because otherwise this throws my being at WindyCon and ChamBanaCon in jeopardy.

Ouch. *hugs*

I didn't think clindamycin was a pain killer... (EDIT:and of course it isn't. Sorry. Inattentive Nyrond is inattentive.)

That sounds moderately awful, and I hope that something can be done to relieve the pain.

Sciatica pain starts at the top of the back of the left or the right side of your pelvic girdle, goes straight down for a little bit, and then wraps around the outside of your thigh and spreads across the front, back and sides. Numerous things can cause sciatica pain, and so everyone has their own tale of what fixed it. (Mine was ibuprofen (e.g., Advil), but in "horse-pill"-sized prescription doses.) Thus, it can go away for hours while sitting or standing, and come blazing back when you do the other. Fingers crossed and wishes wished that your pain (whatever it is from) is as curable and transient as my sciatica was.

Oy. If it is sciatica there are ways to press on the top of the sciatic nerve that alleviate the pain for days at a time.

I hope this is temporary!

*gentle hugs*

Oh man; this sounds awful.

If you think the clindamycin might have something to do with it, is it possible to discontinue that and get a prescription for ciproflaxin?

I hoping for the best for you when you see your doctor. And before.

I finished the scrip on Thursday. I thought it was doing better, and then wham. When I talked to you, it was after lying down for a couple of hours and feeling kinda sorta better.

I was wondering what you meant by "trying not to hurt too much" and hoping it wasn't your leg bothering you still.

Damn. I really hope you feel better soon.

Ouch indeed. I hope that this can be cleared up soon.

Have you talked to your dentist since the pain hit? If the clindamycin is at fault (or at least a contributing factor) maybe she would realize that there was a REASON that you normally take ciproflaxin. Clindamycin may be much better for teeth IN GENERAL (I have no idea myself, but would take the word of a dentist), but if it brings on crippling side effects it is no longer the best antibiotic to use. She may have other antibiotics that she would want to use before ciproflaxin, but getting you off the clindamycin sounds like something to try.

Of course, your doctor may give you a diagnosis that indicates the pain has nothing to do with the clindamycin - or he might want you off the clindamycin immediately and give you a presciption for a different antiboiotic rather than making you back to your dentist for something else.

Whichever way, hope it gets resolved soonest.

Oh man, that sucks, I'm so sorry. I hope you get some relief soon.

UNSOLICITED ADVICE FOLLOWS FEEL FREE TO NOT EVEN READ IT BECAUSE DUDE I KNOW THIS CAN BE SO ANNOYING IF YOU'RE JUST LOOKING FOR A HUG NOT A LECTURE:

That would be a not-impossible-but-really-weird reaction to clindamycin - so I'm guessing there's something different going on that is unrelated, especially if it got worse days after finishing the clinda. :/ But in the not-impossible section of life, and let's face it, your life is weirder than average, be sure to report to the dentist that you think you might have had a bad-ass reaction to clindamycin, so they can never give it to you again. They're right, cipro unfortunately isn't the best thing for the bacteria that most commonly invade unhappy teeth. But there are for sure other options than clindamycin.

And *hugs* I hope you can go to the cons you have planned. Healing thoughts.

Same med my vet gives for the cats after dental extractions. They get it as liquid and hate the taste.

I've had sciatica. So I can offer real sympathy for that pain. I've heard that passing a kidney stone is worse, but I've been fortunate not to ever have one of those.

NOT MEDICAL ADVICE - MERELY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WHICH PROBABLY DOESN'T APPLY TO YOU

In my case, the first time it was sciatica, and the second time it felt the same to me but they told me it was degenerative disk disorder. The Vicodin was not doing anything at all. After the MRI, the doctor scheduled me for a surgery consult. I took the MRI to my chiropractor, who put me on some sort of traction table, where I was strapped down in kind of a double straitjacket, then the table separates in the middle and stretches the muscles around the lower spine. It was like a miracle. I did that every few days for a couple of weeks and the pain was gone. No surgery.

Hoping your pain is relieved as simply as mine was.

Yeah, I agree whether or not there is enough proof that it is the Clindamycin or not, it's not a good idea for you to try it again in the future. As someone who has very odd side effects to drugs it's important to just let doctors know even if they don't like the reasoning. I'm glad to hear you're done with it! Hopefully it just takes a little while to get completely out of your system - if it caused the problem in the first place (or even just exacerbated it). If it was something else I hope it just goes away or gets better soon!! *hugs*

Less frequent urination could easily produce the other symptoms - and can be treated with diuretics (or to a lesser extent with potassium supplements, although that is risky). So I will keep my fingers crossed for an electrolyte imbalance and fluid retention...

My earlier post disappeared in the LJ aether.

Unsolicited advice: When I had sciatica (both legs, thank you very much, it helped to lay w/my back propped up at about a 45 degree angle and a couple of pillows under my knees. My mom said I looked like a taco, if that gives you a visual.

I hope you're feeling much better. We worry about you.

Sorry about the nasty side effect. You'd think that doctors would know more about that, but apparently many of them do not.
