Don't miss this story in the Washington Post (free registration required) about Sibel Edmonds, an FBI translator who directly challenges the credibility of Condaleeza Rice regarding whether or not anyone knew about the possibility of terrorists flying airplanes into buildings... and the larger issue of why the story is hot all over the world, but barely even mentioned in the American press.

Maybe Condi Rice never reads novels

Wait a minute. Tom Clancy, an author with incredible access to Pentagon officials, wrote Debt of Honor (1994) about someone flying a plane into the Capitol in DC. Shortly after 9/11, I heard an interview with Clancy who reported that when he talked about his plot with Pentagon buddies and asked them, "So, have you ever talked about scenarios like this?" one responded, "No, but now we will."

I guess they didn't, and neither did Rice.

I believe it was [livejournal.com profile] khaosworks who mentioned that CNN varies its coverage on the web based on whether it was for an internation audience or for the US. There seems to be a, well... my brain said "complicity of silence" but I know that can't be proper English, can it?

There's a reason I read The Economist.
