filkertomIt's late on Thursday, and I need sleep. Tomorrow is a busy busy busy day, capping off with... MarCon! My concert is Friday at 8:30, and I'll be at the open filk afterwards. I also have a small set during the halftime at the Masquerade, and at one or both of them I'll likely be joined by The Great Luke Ski.

RVD: Actually, it seems to me that he's swayed away from the "4:20" image of his ECW days for a LONG time, now! They seem to be portraying him more in the light of a "new-age zen master" nowadays. And hey, if they want to glorify a pot-smoker, you'll get NO COMPLAINT from me!

So no disrespect, but I don't see how any of these examples counteract the leftist sentiment I've been sensing.

Date: 2004-05-31 05:17 pm (UTC)Dudleys: Yeah, but their gimmick has always been that their daddy got around a lot. De-Von, Bubba Ray, Spike, Big Dick, Sign Guy.... whole lotta Dudley goin' on. I really, really wish WWE had some respect for the tag team division.
Booker: After an appalling debut match ("thanks" to Buff Bagwell), he got into the groove quickly, and grew very popular -- too much so for the comfort zone of HHH, which is why I think he's been held back. He could easily be in the top ten of the company, given the chance.
Chavo: It hurts me to watch this stuff, because Chavo is a very talented guy. It's because of what they do with him and Billy Kidman (whose lonely pain is assuaged only by the un-frickin-believable hotness of his wife ;) that I get pissed off at WWE for even pretending they even have a decent cruiserweight division. They've got a great cruiserweight roster, but I don't think they know what the hell to do with it.
Taker: [snort] Good one! I think he is well aware that he's winding down his career, and he wants to protect his rep. I do wish he was a little more willing to put people over; he did it very well with Jeff Hardy a couple of years ago.
RVD: Agreement in all aspects, but, y'see, for me the thing is that this guy is as athletic as they come. His matches in ECW were almost unfathomable to someone who'd grown up watching Dick the Bruiser and the Sheik, from a time when "Flying" Fred Curry was as high-risk as they got, i.e., one dropkick. If not for the Killer Bees and the British Bulldogs paving the way for Japanese and Mexican wrestlers to be accepted by American audiences, I think RVD woulda broken my brain.

No, I'm not contradicting you -- I think it's an interesting take. I'm just not sure it was a conscious decision on their part, given that their standard level of political commentary is having a "wipe my ass with your flag" match.
And... yeah! Days and days and days. Me and my buddy Hal will go over this stuff for hours at a time.

But, hey, we're dealing with a whole new breed of fans, nowadays. Ones who are "in on the scam", as it were. So it wouldn't be a good idea for wrasslin' to take itself as seriously as it used to.
Ah, well. Who can complain as long as we have "The Hurricane"? :)

Date: 2004-06-01 11:13 am (UTC)There are a very few examples of athleticism and ability that have snuck in. Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero, to name two. And I actually count The Rock in that group, because he works so damn hard -- his character is fantastic, but he'd never have been able to make it if he couldn't back it up in the ring (witness what happened to Hulk Hogan).
And, yeah, kayfabe is long since broken. I've always been an advocate for just pretending it's a big competition, and treating it like a sport. The stories write themselves, and no one has to be supernatural (or supernaturally stupid). I dunno why they keep up with the pretense, especially since it involves their people acting like morons or scheming villains on a regular basis.
Two things about The Hurricane, though (and understand that I'm a big Hurricane fan). One, this poor guy is just being held back. He is now what Hal and I call a "game competitor +1" ("He's getting mangled out there, Gorilla!" "Yeah, Jesse, but he's a real game competitor!") -- the "+1" is because they let him win now and then so he's not completely discredited. Two, I am so ticked off that they don't let him do the choke slam anymore. I thought that was hilarious. Did you ever see when he tried it on Stone Cold and, I think, Triple H (either him or The Rock) at the same time? And they both looked at him, and then whomped him. And the first time he actually got that move off on somebody was golden -- the crowd was going absolutely apeshit, and he was staring at his own hand in absolute amazement that it had frickin' worked. Glorious.
On MarCon events
Date: 2004-06-05 07:48 pm (UTC)The concert in the masquerade ended up being a very big concert. Biggest audience (I would say at least 500, maybe bigger, it's a big room). Long concert..it ended up lasting near an hour, probably over an hour..all with Dr. Demento listening.
Which brings me to the chance I had to talk to Dr. Demento on Sunday and ask him if what he heard this weekend will have an impact on his show. He said he intends to go back to what Tom Smith had sent him. I reminded him that "Return of the King" is timely for the video release of the Lord Of The Rings movie.
