[profile] atlantapendrag lets us know that, for a limited time, Amazon is giving away downloads of damn near everything ever recorded by the mighty Mojo Nixon. (You will have to install the Amazon MP3 Downloader, but it's a small piece of software that has never given me any trouble.)

"Me, your mama, and some other whore /
Floatin' down the river on a shithouse door..."

This is incredible news. Mojo is one of my musical heroes. Even after his retirement, his work remains as awesomely vital and vitally awesome as ever. I've always loved and admired how fully he's been able to embrace the raucous, riotous, infectiously KICKASS subgenre of Southern "redneck bar" country-infused rock & roll, without ever succumbing to the mindless flag-waving OR aggressive Bible-thumping that all too often accompanies said subgenre. Mojo was and is a solid individual, a pillar of anti-authoritarian strength, a perfect blend of "take no bullshit" red-state attitude and "know how to smell it" blue-state intelligence that somehow never felt contradictory. For that reason, he is one of the few figures who gives me honest-to-God HOPE that we, as a nation and a species, might look past petty partisanship and use rock & roll rebellion to set ourselves free. In many ways, he's the musical equivalent of Bill Hicks, only he retired instead of dying, thus giving me FURTHER hope.

And yet, I still have yet to experience most of his catalog. Well, that changes NOW.

Every now and then there'll be a video on youtube that will catch my attention, like "LOL Together" or "Sweet Mormon Boy."

It's a drastically different sort of music (sort of goth-folk-rock, I suppose) but Outgrabe has a whole mess of free downloads. I adore them beyond reason.

Someone alerted me to the free Mojo Nixon last night. We're talking 10 albums and some miscellaneous singles. Oh, and if you want to spend money, there's a collaboration with Jello Biafra and a karaoke album, too.

Now, if you don't want to pollute your system with Amazon's album downloader, you can download each song individually. It's time consuming, but it works.

I do believe I've got my Mojo back... ^_^

I recently got a $25 credit for Amazon.com MP3 downloads, and promptly downloaded all the songs from Fanny's first couple of albums. They were a kick-ass all-woman rock band back in the early 70s, and I agree with David Bowie that it's a shame they're completely forgotten today.

I also got Ted Neeley's Ulysses: The Concert (which I have on cassette as Ulysses: The Greek Suite), a rock oratorio that tells the story of the Odyssey.

I was mightily impressed that Amazon.com MP3 had even this obscure music available for download.

Excuse me, did you get the mp3 of "Ulysses"? I've been looking for the video everywhere and found only one song on Youtube. I'll be so glad if you help me, I really love Ted Neeley, but i doubt this concert can be bought here, in Russia.

While not my favorite Mojo track, the harmonica work on Transylvanian Xmas (on Frenzy) is impressive.

1) Elvis Is Everywhere "Why do you think they call it evolution, anyway? It's ELVISLUTION!"
His most accessible (and popular?) song.

2) Redneck Rampage "They got little bitty brains and great big guns!"
She's All Liquored Up "The whole club's prayin' she finally passes out!"
UFOs, Big Rigs, and Bar-B-Q "UFOs are big rigs, they come from outer space, stopping off at the truckstop earth, lookin' for some food to eat."

All three were used in the computer game Redneck Rampage.

3) I Hate Banks, Destroy All Lawyers, Don Henley Must Die

Ugh, the Amazon Music Downloader keeps trying to start Windows Media Player which I do NOT allow on my system!! Fucking Microsoft shills!! I need to see now if you can listen to the donwloaded files in anything other than WMP, they may be in WMP-proprietary format files, which makes them useless to me.

Amazon releases its music downloads in mp3 format, so they should be able to be used with any music player that uses that format. The Amazon Downloader has the helpful (for some people anyway) feature of automatically adding the song to your iTunes or Windows Media Player library, depending on your player preference. (I am a fan of iTunes, so I personally like this feature.)

If you download each song individually without using the downloader, it shouldn't do this. But it's also more time consuming.

You can also set the Amazon downloader to NOT add the file to either. From the downloader's File menu, choose Preferences. Set the drop-down for "When a track finishes downloading ..." to "Do nothing." The file can then be imported into the player of your choice.

It adds it to WMP by by default since that's what the bulk of users have for a player, but it's easy enough to change this operation.

In the Amazon downloader options, you can tell it to do nothing once the file is downloaded. Then when you hit the listen button, it opens up whatever player you have configured to open when you click on mp3 files.

Actually, there's a link on the downloader page to skip downloading the downloader and just download the MP3s directly. You don't HAVE to use the Amazon downloader.

Recently discovered an excellent pseudo-Celtic band: Wicked Tinkers. In addition to the traditional instruments used by Celtic bands, they add in the didge among others.

If I haven't convinced you that you need to be listening to shemusic before now, this won't do it. Still, I can but try! (Many CDs downloadable free! I'd say to start with coloris but now that Pony Canyon signed them, that one's no longer there.) But if that isn't good enough... well, okay, if that isn't good enough you are clearly a very broken robot. But if it's not working for you, then maybe some of the highly functional live tracks from the 2008 Blip Festival might help repair your installation without requiring a firmware upgrade.

It is absolutely necessary to listen to Kathy Mar's song The Word of God at http://www.prometheus-music.com/audio/wordgod.mp3

Prometheus Music has other free downloads of specific songs from their albums. And when I have some disposable income, I am buying me some.

In related news: I want some Frank Hayes. Firebird is nonfunction, iTunes hasn't heard of him, and Amazon is no help at all.

Anybody know where I can send money and get a CD? Or downloads?

I've never heard of Mojo Nixon, but this move by him is awesome enough that I'm going to download his shizz and give it all a listen in good faith.

And if I like it enough, I might just buy some of his albums. Because I like having the official copies of things. Downloads just aren't good enough for me.

Yay! I had most of the albums, but they were old and didn't rip very cleanly. So I'm just beyond thrilled. Thank you for pointing this out.
Let's see.. I can't say enough about Marian Call (http://www.mariancall.com). She's local but does shows all over the place. Her shows are great, and she super nice too. (hah.. totally unrelated, "It's a Good Thing He Can't Read My Mind" by Christine Lavin just popped up on my ipod)
Jamie Anderson (http://www.jamieanderson.com/) has a few songs available for download. She's a folk singer and one of my current favorites. Some of her songs are touching and make me a bit weepy, some of them make me laugh out loud. For non-squeamish people, Menstrual Tango is too funny.
Phoebe Kreutz's (http://www.phoebekreutz.com/) song Dumber Than I Thought is totally worth the download and available free on her site. It's hilarious.
