So, it's been a busy night:

* In what looks like an attempt to avoid violence at the originally scheduled ceremony, Administrator L. Paul Bremer formally transferred Iraqi sovereignty to an interim government headed by Interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi. Then Bremer got the hell out of dodge. So, Iraq is now in charge of its own destiny. Except for, y'know, 138,000 U.S. soldiers, the 14 military bases we're building there, and the oil wells we still run. It's magical when they leave the nest.

* 40,000 people protested Dubya in Turkey. Their attitude was not improved by major traffic routes in Instanbul being effectively shut down for three days so that Fearless Leader could have a hassle-free drive through town.

* Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 911 is the number one box office hit in America this weekend, having beaten the heinous-looking White Chicks by a couple million dollars in one-third the number of theaters. In the name of freedom, right-wingers of all stripes spent a lot of last week trying to keep theaters from showing the film.

Readings for today include this analysis in the Washington Post, an excellent set of talking points at Driving Votes, and Democratic Underground's Top 10 Conservative Idiots.

Istanbul not Constantinople

Lordy, tell me about it. I drowsed this morning to the news radio droning on about the sovereignty ceremony and fell back into a dream where I was in the Army, at the ceremony, serving as a bodyguard to ex-President Reagan. Nobody tried to kill him but I did prevent someone from kicking him in the head. Somewhere there must be meaning to this; I have never been in the Army and I thought my subconscious knew that Reagan was dead as well as no longer president. Must be highly political. I was horribly late to work today, exhausted and depressed.

And, this afternoon saw our President approving Iraq's likely decision to declare martial law.

Worst. Administration. Ever.

I solomnly swear that I am up to no good...
