Have fun, play nice. And please keep Spider-Man 2 spoilers to a minimum. (I'm planning to see it at least twice between now and the weekend, along with Fahrenheit 9/11.)

I love how Spiderman 2 is rated PG-13 for 'stylized violence'. I'm trying to picture them debating this "Its violent." "Yeah, but its stylish violence!" "Well, in that case."

Fandom on Film

We did see THE TERMINAL last night, and I must say that Spielberg pays homage to his sci-fi roots. He got references to Twilight Zone, Outer Limits and original Star Trek all letter-perfect, plus a friendly nod to convention fandom. Hee. Our corner was noisy with raucous laughter a couple of times; probably the rest of the audience was wondering what the heck we were laughing at. Let'em wonder!

Actually, we went with a friend who worked as an extra to play "Where's Waldo" and try to spot him, which we did. He's in the background right over Tom Hanks's shoulder in the "fifty-fifty" scene where Viktor gets his application rejected, again. Jay says that Spielberg ticked off a lot of extras [who rely on multiple days of walking through scenes after all] by hiring people for one scene and one scene only each, so that the crowds passing through the airports were guaranteed to have NO repeat appearances by the same faces. Another friend of ours fell to the cutting room floor with the Cher scene, too bad. She got paid all the same.

It's an extra cute film, go see it.

The Tit That Keeps On Giving

Oy. The FCC might fine twenty Viacom stations a total of $550,000 over Janet Jackson's breast flash at the Super Bowl (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=564&ncid=564&e=2&u=/nm/20040630/ts_nm/media_indecency_jackson_dc).

I find this incredibly stupid, petty, and counterproductive -- because, if I were Janet Jackson's publicist, I would register the trademark "Million Dollar Tits". I'd center a concert tour around it. And every bit of choreography would be based on the old Star Trek costume design theory of "Will it fall off, or won't it...?" (As David Gerrold pointed out, "It never did, of course, but you never gave up hoping....")

Fahrenheit 9/11 is wrenching but awesome. I've seen it twice; the 2nd time, I knew to bring kleenex.

just FINALLY got to listen to the copy of "plugged" i got at marcon. yes, life IS that busy, sad to say. my cd player, on random play, chose to inflict "falling free" on my sensitive little mind as i was navigating the watterson expressway in the dark. not a good time to be so struck by a song that i was fighting tears. all i have to say is wow. i know just enough about music to know i know nothing, but i was moved by the complexity of interveaving voices amid the seeming simplicity of an a capella song. i was actually halfway through the song when i realized i'd heard absolutely no accompanying instruments. somewhat fortunately, i'd had practice navigating that part of the expressway with tears in my eyes last weekend hearing "into the west" from return of the king for the first time. remember the comment i made about an intelligent and funny man being hot? an intelligent, funny, and sometimes sentimental man is even hotter.
i've gotta go tell the girls. :-) but don't worry, we know better than to request such deep and moody songs during a comedy set.

Daffy Dubya

I was watching the original short of "Duck Dodgers in the 24th 1/2 Century" on DVD yesterday...

Is it just me, or does anyone else think the finale of that cartoon serves as the perfect analogy for what's going on in Iraq?

Can't you just see Dubya and Sadaam standing on the one last, tiny piece of Iraqi soil that hasn't been blown to smithereens?

Dubya: Like I said, Sadaam, this here oil-rich land ain't big enough for the both of us, so... OFF ya go! And now, Iraq is a free, sovereign democracy thanks to... GEORGE W. BUSH... AMERICAN PRESIDENT!!!
