Wow, what a great piece.

I've watched my father, dealing with the VA in his early '70's, go through the very transformation cited at the end of the essay: "The logical extension of this spirit is social welfare and the myriad government programs with long dry names all very uninteresting to you until you suddenly need one and then you turn into a Democrat. A liberal is a conservative who's been through treatment."

Strange days indeed. Pardon me, I think that's Beezelbub phoning in his ice skate order now... *smile*
