Hi, long time fan, first time poster. Just wanted to point out that the lady behind that auction is also the evil genius behind the very, very funny Queen of Wands (http://www.queenofwands.net), which every last one of you should read. Even you in the back. I see you trying to sneak out. Siddown.

Drat! I wanted to post that! :-) Shows what I get for walking away from the computer for a few minutes...

QoW is hilarious, well-written, and realistic. It is, however, story-arc-based instead of one-shot-joke-based, so if you want to get involved, it's better to start back a while. At the beginning, if possible.

Kinda kewl, indeed. I'll have to catch up with it later.

So, what all are your favorite online strips? Besides the Big Four (Sluggy (http://www.sluggy.com/), Kevin & Kell (http://www.kevinandkell.com/), PVP Online (http://www.pvponline.com/), and Penny Arcade (http://www.penny-arcade.com/index.php3)), that is.

Mine are Partially Clips (http://www.partiallyclips.com/) (by our own... umm... [livejournal.com profile] partiallyclips), Sabrina Online (http://www.sabrina-online.com/index.html), User Friendly (http://www.userfriendly.org/), and Pibgorn (http://www.comics.com/comics/pibgorn/index.html). (Yes, I know, Pibgorn isn't online-only. It's just too cool, y'know?)

Something Positive and Sexy Losers (usually work-unsafe) haven't been mentioned yet, so I'd include them. S*P is updated daily (7x/w) when its owner can get around to is and has an LJ community, [livejournal.com profile] som_pos; SL is updated infrequently at best.

Add to the list Bob the Angry Flower (http://angryflower.com) and Two Lumps (http://twolumps.keenspace.com). angryflower.com is updated on Tuesdays and Fridays, with the week's comic usually posted on Friday. Stephen Notley, the strip's creator, also posts movie reviews and the occasional insightful political rant. All good reading. The artwork is brilliant, and the humor is very intelligent. BtAF is my absolute favorite comic, web or otherwise. Two Lumps is a cute little strip about a couple of cats, and it's updated M-W-F.

So, what all are your favorite online strips?

Oh, what a question...:)

Something Positive and Queen of Wands, which you've already been linked to,
Venus Envy about a mtf high schooler,
Ozy & Millie about a couple fox kits and everything going on with their lives, including Ozy's dad the dragon who has another land in the cushions of his couch,
Two Lumps about a pair of housecats,
Catharsis about a woman, her squirrel, her sentient dust bunnies, her kitten, her dragon and his sock puppet the pirate,
Fallen Angels Used Books which isn't funny but is *Good*,
Nice Hair which rocks,
and Todd & Penguin which is about Todd...and Penguin. *Grin*

There are more, but only 'cause I'm way too into webcomics. *grin*

Gessi, who used to be way too into print comics, so it's a natural progression

Sinfest, and definitely UF. I was introduced to Frazz about a year ago; it's not in the local papers, so I have to read it online. Plus, since I no longer buy the daily paper, I've been following For Better or For Worse online for [mumble] years, now; it's too cool to give up.

Since I don't read newspapers I'd have no idea if something is "online only", so...

(1) 9 Chickweed Lane. Juliette and Edda both remind me that it's good to daydream, Thorax reminds me _way_ too much of my dad, and Solange reminds me of all the cats I've ever loved.

(2) Ok-Cancel. As my day job brings me into contact with software development project leaders, graphic designers, multiple programmers and the occasional web site/software user, and my usual social milieu brings me into contact with, well, project leaders, graphic designers, multiple programmers and the occasional web site/software user... this is laugh-until-you-cry material.

(3) Unspeakable Vault (of Doom). Tentacular Lovecraftian goodness from France.

Heheh PartiallyClips isn't online-only either. It runs in 10 newspapers and 2 magazines. :)

I met the creator of Queen of Wands at Comic-Con. She was pretty damn cool.

And that's why I love webcomics; it's still such a close community. Of the comics mentioned in this thread, I have been on panels with the creators of: Sluggy Freelance, Kevin & Kell, User Friendly, Something Positive, Mac Hall, Megatokyo, Venus Envy, and Schlock Mercenary. I have also talked at length with the creators of PvP, Penny Arcade and GPF. I love this business.

Take a deep breath, buddy. All will be well.

Okay, no, it won't. I heard this about a month ago, and I've been trying to ignore it away. It ain't goin'. I haven't even discussed it with my rasslin' buddy Hal, who adores the Hal Jordan GL and who has never gotten over the whole Parallax thing.

Just thinking about it now, I think I know what's going on in their tiny little Hollywood minds: The whole notion of the GL Corps, the oath, all that grave seriousness, is just too much for modern audiences to handle. Best to make it over the top.

I think they're incredibly wrong.

Matter o' fact, I know a way that I bet would work great. The reason Hal got the ring from Abin Sur in the first place was that he was fearless. I can just see the trailer:

[WB Logo. Thunderous bass drum hit. Flash to the smouldering wreckage of a personal spaceship, about the size of a Winnebago.]

HAL JORDAN (V.O.): Will you look at that.

[Flash to Hal Jordan walking toward the camera {and presumably the spaceship}. His friend Thomas Kalmaku grabs his arm to try and stop him.]

THOMAS KALMAKU: What're you doing!?

[Flash to medium shot of the spaceship interior. No sparks or anything, but some smoke, a couple of flickering lights, and one cold light bathing the still form of the crimson-skinned alien Abin Sur.]

ABIN SUR (V.O.): I have been searching for a being of indomitable will...

[Flash to Hal's face as he looks down in wonder at Abin Sur.]

ABIN SUR (V.O.): My replacement in the war against evil...

[Medium close-up of a dying Abin Sur. He holds out the GL ring in his fingers.]

ABIN SUR: You.

[The ring drops into Hal's open hand.]

TITLES on black: IN BRIGHTEST DAY

[POV from a city street. Hal as GL, zooming through the city and over the crowds, from lower left to upper right of the shot.]

TITLES on black: IN BLACKEST NIGHT

[Shot of Hal as GL, camera spiraling around him, as he recharges the ring.]

CAROL FERRIS (V.O.): The Guardians chose you because you're fearless.

[G.L. striding into a hail of bullets, a translucent green shield catching each one with a little pillowing effect.]

CAROL FERRIS (V.O.): They're aliens.

[Hideous monster standing up to its full height, ten or so feet tall, eclipsing the sky. Armor, weapons, makes a Predator look like a nancy-boy. A Weaponer of Qward.]

CAROL FERRIS (V.O.): They don't understand....

[G.L. looking up at the Weaponer. There might be a glimmer of fear in his expression.]

CAROL FERRIS (V.O.): Humans need fear.

[GL sprawled and hurting on a moonscape. A shadowed Sinestro stands over him.]

CAROL FERRIS (V.O.): It keeps us alive.

[Medium shot of GL doing something difficult with the ring. We can't even see what -- there's just emerald energy everywhere. His expression is soundless, angry pain.]

CAROL FERRIS (V.O.): It keeps us sane.

[Flash of black for precisely the length of time it takes for Hal to say:]

GREEN LANTERN: Sinestro?

[Close up of GL, left side of shot.]

GREEN LANTERN: You're gonna conquer the world, and that was the best name you could come up with?

[GL out in space, being blasted from the right side of the screen to the left.]

SINESTRO (V.O.): You misunderstand twice.

[Close up of Sinestro, right side of screen.]

SINESTRO: Your ancestors based that word on my name.

[GL watching a holo-projection of the Earth. We zoom to roughly Earth orbit.]

SINESTRO (V.O.): And I am not here to conquer.

[Previous zoom continues past the Earth to the Sun... which blows up. Screen goes white.]

[Metallic-Green GL logo starts from dot in the center of the screen, expanding to fill and then escape it.]

[Montage of action shots. At least one furious kiss, at least one of GL punching someone with a huge green fist.]

GREEN LANTERN (V.O.): Let all who worship evil's might... beware my power.

[Medium close up, angle down, of a skeptical kid.]

KID: How come you talk like that?

[Medium close up, angle up {from the kid's POV}, of GL. He gives a little shrug of the eyebrows, a quirk of the lips.]

GREEN LANTERN: I took an oath.

TITLES on black: FEEL THE POWER

But before that... You realize, of course, in a GOOD GL, Shane Helms would have to at LEAST make a cameo!

Now, since we're talking dream-trailers....

[Deep, mysterious, foreboding music rises as "Universal" logo fades in and out]

[Series of long, scanning close-up shots of some mysterious blue object is accompanied by deep, severe-sounding voice-over...]

V.O.: When the universe is in peril... When existence threatens to become unraveled... When time itself has descended into chaos...

[Fade-in of far-away shot of a blue, old-style British "Police" box, that the camera slowly closes-up on]

V.O.: There is only ONE we can turn to... With wisdom beyond that of any human being... For indeed...

[Door of Police box swings open]

V.O.: He is NOT a human being!

Off-Screen Voice: A-HEM!

[Sound of record scratch as camera quickly pans down to show a small, white, bespectacled dog standing in the Police Box]

Mr. Peabody: You were expecting Marty McFly?

[Music changes to "The End Of The World (As We Know It)" by R.E.M. as scene cuts to large, bright, cartoony C.G. TITLES]

V.O.: Mr. Peabody... The MOVIE? You've got to be kidding!

[Music pauses briefly for quick cut to Mr. P]

Mr. P: I never kid!

[Music recommences]
[Credits flash]

PVP vs the Comics Syndicate

From: [identity profile] redaxe.livejournal.com
Just saw in Boing Boing that PVP Online's creator was exploring the option of syndicating the strip to the papers, but the syndicates wanted more control than he wanted. So, since he likes the idea of being in the papers, he's offering the strip to them FREE.

That's cool.

(Note: No permalinks at PVP; this is in the "A Piece of My Mind" section, and is the one titled "SDCC 2004 - Part Four:" dated July 30, 2004.)

At Last, At Last, My Dream Come True

Frustrating morning, trying to record the guitar for "Talk Like A Pirate Day". Wasn't working, and I finally went to the Acid Loops, which did the job.

Reward was getting that copy of Doom 3 (http://www.doom3.com/). It was kinda taking a chance -- I've got a Radeon 8500LE graphics card, which is the bare minimum the game will run.

But it will run.

Ohhhh, mama.

Even on the relatively low resolution (800x600) and detail level (medium, 2 out of 4), this is the most gorgeous game I've ever seen.

And it's already got me more creeped out than Silent Hill ever did.

Must. Do. Music. Kill zombies later.
