The Grand Dame of TV cooking, Julia Child, has passed away at the age of either 91 or 92. We'll miss you, milady.

(Can't help it. Can't get Dan Ackroyd gasping "Save the liver!" out of my head.)

She was too cool.

I'll have to cook some French food for dinner tonight. And if I weren't pregnant, we'd be cracking into the good wine to toast her.

Did you know she was a spy for the Allies?

(And that's ok. It took forEVER for me to get the RHPS lyrics out of my head earlier this week..)

Spy?

It was in her biography.. she worked for the OSS. In fact, one of her projects was to cook up a shark repellent to keep sharks off underwater mines.

Wowsers. This is an INCREDIBLY bad year for veteran cookbook authors. Alan Davidson, Jeff Smith, Myra Waldo and now Julia. I may have to reconsider my plans to start writing cookbooks...

My favorite was the blowtorch for the baked Alaska.

I thought the SNL line as "Save the giblets!" Oh, well.

Julia Child was not actually a spy herself (she was too darn distinctive to blend into the background), but she performed more of a coordinator function, gathering, assessing, and reporting the info that the OSS agents in Southeast Asia acquired. And this was at a time when women in such organizations mostly fetched coffee and answered phones. She was impressive then and only grew more dynamic and capable as she pursued her ground-breaking culinary career.

*sigh* She'll be missed.

She was one of the pioneers of television. "The French Chef" was one of the early cooking shows -- one of many shows WGBH in Boston produced for PBS. She was both knowledgeable and entertaining.

The composer of the theme for "The French Chef", John Morris, also wrote a lot of the music for the early Mel Brooks movies.

The first thing that popped into my head was Python:

"Fred! We've got an eater!"
"I'll get the oven on!"

...it has been a rough couple of years for the arts and entertainment industry. that's terribly depressing. still, she deserves a good long rest after a long, illustrious, and flat out jam-packed life.

A&E's Biography ran their episode on Julia this past weekend, and it included her commentary on and a clip from Akroyd's routine. :)
