Disney Legend Frank Thomas Dies

One of the unsung gods of animation has passed away at the age of 92. Among other things, Frank Thomas was the man responsible for Bambi's ice skating lesson from Thumper, Pinocchio's "I Got No Strings" number, Cinderella's wicked stepmother, Lady and the Tramp slurping spaghetti into a kiss, and Captain Frickin' Hook.

Yet another of the giants has left us. I know it happens to all, but at a time when Disney animation is facing a very uncertain future, it's particularly sad to lose someone who himself was a living history of the studio--and who brought so many smiles to so many faces.

Ouch ... that leaves Ollie Johnston (who will be 92 end of next month) as the last of the Nine Old Men. Thomas' rendering of Captain Hook coupled with Hans Conried's voicing was and is some of the best Disney ever did.

Yes, when we lose Ollie, it will be a very sad day indeed. The "Nine Old Men" were a unique group of exceptionally talented people. We'll not see their like again.
