Date: 2004-09-29 08:29 am (UTC)SpaceShipOne went up this morning, and is currently on her glide path down. This is a great step towards commercial/personal transport to space. Which is something we very much need.
I have to admit to getting teary-eyed when I saw SS1 break atmo. Seeing the earth from this spaceship was a breathtaking and very emotional thing.

Date: 2004-09-29 09:19 am (UTC)The roll was a little scary, and apparently ground control told Medville to abort, and he -wouldn't-, held on till cutoff and assurances he was high enough for the prize. That takes stones. Big ones.
In a fit of enthusiasm yesterday, I sent Virgin Galactic a resume.
YAY!!!
Date: 2004-09-29 08:33 am (UTC)In other news, we've recently upgraded the site http://www.kerryoniraqwar.com Now we have a thorough debunking of the GOP "Flipper" video. For those who don't know, the "Flipper" video is a piece of GOP propaganda, an 11-minute video which supposedly shows John Kerry flopping all over the place on the subject of Iraq. Even many Kerry supporters have been demoralized by it, and Bush supporters have been enthusiastically sending it to hundreds of their friends. You can see this thing at the GOP site http://www.kerryoniraq.com. Viewers there post things like: "I truly believe that if every American can see this video, George Bush will definitely win the election. I cannot imagine, after watching this video, what the Kerry supporters could say in defense!? PLEASE EVERYONE THAT SEES THIS VIDEO, FORWARD IT ON TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW--- INCLUDING KERRY SUPPORTERS AND UNDECIDED VOTERS! THE WORD MUST GET OUT ABOUT THIS!!" The GOP says over 7 million people have seen it. *sigh*
Actually, though, the "Flipper" video is a complete hoax. I don't mean they're a wee bit off in their portrayal of Kerry's views, I mean they're distorting to the point that the only word for it is "lying." The amount of trick editing and distortion involved would do any fascist propaganda maker proud. Kerry's actually making perfect sense, and they just chopped the hell out of everything he said and then added their own comments, along with the soundtrack from "Flipper." A shockingly high number of times, they carefully edited Kerry's statements to imply that he meant the exact opposite of what he really meant. It's quite a piece of work. We lay it all out, clip by clip, at http://www.kerryoniraqwar.com/video/index.html You can play the clips and read what Kerry really said, and get a feeling for how desperate the GOP is to deceive people about where Kerry is coming from.
We've been hearing from Kerry supporters who had been demoralized and feel more motivated now that they know that Kerry was making perfect sense and the video was all a fraud. We're hoping people will keep spreading the word; it would be nice if the truth had a fighting chance against the smear machine.

The Return of the Schwartz, Uh-Huh...

Date: 2004-09-30 09:31 am (UTC)I seem to recall an interview with Mel Brooks where he stated that he took all the Sci-Fi movies he could think of and spoofed them all in SPACEBALLS. Goodness knows, anybody on this list could think of many more than Mel, being more versed in Sci-Fi Lore overall. Hmmm, maybe send him a copy of ROCKET RIDE? Tom Smith as Bar-Bar Barfolemew? The mind croggles! [ow, don't hurt me Tom!]
Re: The Return of the Schwartz, Uh-Huh...
Date: 2004-09-30 03:07 pm (UTC)Most likely, he will do a prequel to spoof the SW prequels of the past few years, as well as all the other science fiction films that have come out in the past decade-and-a-half...though perhaps sending him a copy of "Rocket Ride" might give him even more fuel for his imagination.
Hey, what's everyone's favorite line from Spaceballs? You already know mine. :)
