The Bush administration is attempting to supress the CIA's fianl report on 9/11... the one that names names.

A California lawyer tried to get John Kerry excommunicated, and is now misrepresenting his contact with the Vatican.

Dick Cheney implied that Kerry couldn't defend the U.S. against terrorists attacking with nuclear weapons.

Bush blames lack of flu vaccines on a "major manufacturing defect", while in the same article Cheney blames economics. An important point: Do you really trust these guys to deal with another anthrax scare if they can't handle the flu?

Evil is definitely the word for it. Also, the GOP is planning to try to intimidate voters in Detroit (because it's a heavily black area) and in Ohio. Anyone who can spare any time at all on Election Day to help make sure people get to the polls without being harassed and scared off, please volunteer! Get Out The Vote efforts truly make a difference, especially when the Republicans are planning to have people out there trying to scare people -- challenging and harassing them at the polls, etc. (The Kerry campaign office for Ann Arbor is down on 4th street, more or less across from Common Language, next to that Asian cafe place.)

Vanessa and I are volunteering for Election Protection, a non-partisan effort to counteract voter intimidation efforts. We've been assigned to work in Flint.

The term that I suspect psychologists would use for Bush and his smears is "projection" -- except that it's a deliberate attempt to pre-empt more accurate characterizations of W as doing or being something by pinning the label on his opponents first.

"Scare tactics" is the least of what the Chimp's done that he's accused Kerry of.

I said, whilst watching the last candidate debate, that Kerry was cruising for excommunication. Seems I was not the only one who had that thought.

Honourable Husband is going to be working at the polls this year, along with a friend of the opposite party, both of whom get along well and won't let any intimidator of any political stripe try anything at their polling place. I pity the fool who tries!

Hey, Bush is right. And so is Cheney -- the flu vaccine shortage is the result of a major manufacturing defect that was economically based.

That the economics in question was a result of their own policies, and that they were at all responsible -- much less the huge portion of responsibility they do have for this crisis -- is why the sniveling liars ought to be held criminally liable.

I'll settle for heaving out the lot of 'em in two weeks. Oh, and maybe some slander charges against the scuzzball in the first link: "murder" is a pretty nasty charge. (Yes, it's been slung around in that context since day 1 -- it ought to have been slapped down or countered long since.)

But they probably mean it the other way around: tort reform would make it possible for the company to ship more vaccine by absolving them of liability for manufacturing defects.

Oh, yeah. Using your stupid, fallacious bullshit argument to diss the most popular governor in Michigan's history -- that's a good plan.

Speaking of drinking....has anyone else noticed that in speeches they've played on TV & the radio Bush sounds more and more slurred? Also that he's not going to have his annual physical till after the election. He got his in August last year and the year before that.

Are there lingering health problems? Look at his debate performance, I'd call it inconsistant at best, find the video from his Texas govenor's debates a few years ago and compare the two. We could have Cheney as President...(yes Clinton did have one the year he ran for re-election)

They *are* both right about the causes: even a small manufacturing problem in an industry where production is severely limited by economic factors can cause a shortage. The problem is that they're trying to scare people into believing that no one wants to manufacture flu vaccine because of threat of lawsuits, (so of course you must vote against the side with the < scare> Trial Lawyer< / scare>!) That may be more true for childhood type vaccines, where uberparents are looking for anyone to blame for little Johnny's "attention" problems, but the problem for flu vaccine manufacturers is that production takes an awful lot of time and materials and there is no guaranteed market, since there is a one season shelf life. This is exactly the type of production that government subsidies were invented for - to make sure we have supplies of things that aren't otherwise economically viable.

I've been highly skeptical about the efficacy of flu shots for some years anyway. Every year I got them, I got sick anyway when the strain of flu viri in the vaccine was not the same one I caught. I fought my boss the past three years, refrained from the shots and didn't get any flu. I did eat more carefully and take my vitamins and herbs and all that, to be sure. For that matter, taking better care of myself has resulted in less winter colds in general. [Present sniffle excepted; I've had this since the last SCA campout a week and a half ago and I attribute it to a nasty chill.]

Anyway, the whole Flu Shot Shortage seems to me just another Bush diversion from ongoing issues. My opinion, your mileage may vary, &c.

The art of predicting a flu strain is uncertain at best. (I'd suggest it's done using chicken eggs, which are required for the vaccine, but it's an obscurish joke :-)

IIRC there is evidence that even if you don't get the vaccine for the exact strain, vaccination tends to provide some protection against the worst effects. But I could be mistaken, there.

Of course, being in a severely limited group of manufacturers also means a good chance to profit. I mean, you're guaranteed a large market share, and there's not much competition to bring the price down. (Government controls on the price also keep it from skyrocketing, or should.)

The fact that it takes three months to produce flu vaccine means that the lack of vaccine ought to have been known about months ago, when the plant failed inspection -- and been dealt with, at the time. It's that the government is scrambling to make up almost 50 million doses, when options could have been long in place, that's appalling.

And I'm waiting for someone to convince me, who's not in a high-risk group, that when I get the flu which I need not have had, and lose time from work -- and I work as a contract employee, with no paid time off -- that my family's lower quality of life isn't a result of the Administration's incompetence. Or lack of caring. Or both.
