Additional problem: "He cried 'Wolf!' " Even the mainstream media couldn'r resist that line.

Have you seen the Democratic response, Eagle? Now that's an ad -- I wish it had been running for six months.

And also see Lie Girls. PERFECT sendup of late-night phone sex ads. And a perfect skewer of the lying liars.

Have you seen the Democratic response, Eagle?

If the Republicans want to counter-attack by associating themselves with the eagle, all anyone needs to do is to bring out the tape of John Ashcroft singing "Let the Eagle Soar".

I did see that last night, but forgot to link to it. Thanks!

There are already several other parody sites. But my favorite reaction was when they played it on Crossfire last week... and the audience laughed (http://atrios.blogspot.com/2004/10/puppies.html).

Yea.. "Look! The Terrorists are fuzzy-wuzzy doggies!"

On a scarier note, the banners on both the NYT and CNN say that Chief Justice Rehnquist has been hospitalized with thyroid cancer.

No details yet.

The election is going to come down to volunteers. Very seriously - the Repubs are planning to have people in every polling place to challenge new voters and make them prove they have a right to vote. This will slow down voting and may cause people to give up due to intimidation or not having enough time to stand in line. The Dems are organizing armies of volunteers to help make sure everyone gets to vote. I never understood before that volunteers make a big difference in the outcome, but they do, and this year, they're *crucial* -- at this point, it's as if the generals have done almost everything they can to win the war, but the final result is going to depend on hand-to-hand combat, so to speak. Basically, the only way Bush can win is by preventing people from voting, and the Repubs are gearing up to do just that.

I'm the precinct organizer for one precinct on the Old West Side in Ann Arbor. We need people to greet people at the polling places, make sure they have their ID and they're in the right place, inform them of their rights, and keep an eye on what the Republicans are doing -- there's a lot we can do to make sure the GOP vote-suppression tactics don't work, but we need people at every polling place. Anyone who's concerned, please call your local Democratic campaign headquarters to volunteer -- or if you're not sure how to do that, you can just respond to me and I'll help get you connected, whether you live in Ann Arbor or not. We're working out the who's-going-to-do-what for election day right now, so please speak up if you can help.

I'm not sure how much help I can be (I've got a toddler, and I can't drive), but I wouldn't mind the chance to do something. I live near Barton and Pontiac, a couple of blocks from Northside School, and vote at Arrowwood Hills.

Not in your particular area but... Honourable Husband is going to be a poll worker this time. He is over 6 foot and 280 pounds and pretty intimidating looking. Maybe more big burly guys should work the polls, just to discourage any displays of, um, interference.

Wasn't there something coded in the Book of Revelation that hints that the year of Armageddon would be in 2012? Also, the Aztec calendar ends on 2012. Do they know something we don't know?

I've been wrong before. I thought something dire would happen in 1998, as 1998 = 666 x 3.

Of course, would would really scare the bejeezus out of the Pubbies and make them soil their gray flannel elephant shorts is the idea that a vote for Shrub in '04 could result in a campaign for Hillary in '08.

Mandrake, Have You Ever Heard Of Fluoridation?

First off: Source material, to catch everyone else up. Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Revelation), a really impressive flowchart (http://revelationflowchart.home.comcast.net/), PBS's Frontline (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/apocalypse/explanation/brevelation.html), and The Skeptic's Annotated Bible (http://www.skepticsannotatedbible.com/rev/index.html).

My own take is pretty simple: Prophecy tends to be really frickin' vague, specifically so that when it doesn't work out as advertised, prophets can say something like, "Ahhh, but we missed this sign, which means that it will happen at that appointed hour!" Exhibit a: Nostradamus (http://skepdic.com/nostrada.html).

See, I don't believe in that stuff.

But many of Bush's supporters do.

Example: According to some end-times (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/End_times) prophecy Israel is supposed to be destroyed by its amassed enemies -- and so they support arming the state of Israel and having it try to militarily dominate the Middle East, not because they necessarily agree with its policies but because that will bring its enemies together to destroy Israel and hasten the Rapture.

There's even an End Times Monitor (http://www.findthepower.com/etm/), keeping track of news that may signal the end of the world.

As per usual, I'm not nearly so afraid of God as I am of His fan club.
From: [identity profile] nuveena.livejournal.com

Hell, many of Bush's STAFF believe in the Biblical Armageddon...

Yup.

Ditto that.

Will there be an end times? Who's gonna win the Gog vs. Magog slugfest? I don't know, but I want to hedge my bets just in case. (Come the Rapture, can I have all the abandoned cars in Grand Rapids? :-) )

As a matter of fact, I have heard of fluoridation. And no, I don't grok what else you're referencing in the subject line. :-?

Ummm... you were discussing a conspiracy theory, and so I quoted Sterling Hayden as Gen. Jack D. Ripper in Dr. Strangelove, spouting the beginning of his amazing justification rant.

I have. It's been a Long Time since I last saw it. And as you probably guessed, I've been watching a lot of Discovery Channel and TLC -- perhaps too much.

I know it was Slim Pickens who rode the bomb down, but I often like to say that it was Slim Whitman who rode it down, yodeling all the way.

A friend of mine wrote an entry about the explosives, talking about what substances were involved and just how powerful they can be.

http://www.livejournal.com/users/dagoski/111560.html?#cutid1

He says he hasn't looked the exact figures up (being at work and all...), but in my experience, his memory's generally pretty good for things like this.

CBS radio network led with the stolen explosives story last night, that's not exactly "soft pedaling" is it?

I'm not sanguine about living in LA this decade but I don't spend much time downtown but out in the 'burbs. Desktop Publishing is Good. Sherman Oaks would not be on any terror organization's top ten list of targets, would it?

Ahhh, but note that I specifically said "TV news media". From reports off several of the blogs, as of this morning, CNN, Fox, and CNBC were still trying to play it as Just Another Story, and even making a lame stab at saying "AHA! These were the Weapons of Mass Destruction!" No take on NBC/ABC/CBS that I know of.

Anything is a terror target. You will never know who might have it in for one place or another. Life is not safe. Therefore, be afraid... or live.

Heh I can imagine the reaction if the next attack was in Kansas.. half the people would be just horrified the terrorists could get in this close, the rest would just say Huh? There are people living out there? I thought that was just grass and tornados??? Seriously, being a heavily republican state, we poor young liberals get to hear alot of fire and brimstone, you are the cause of all the evil, you want the terrorists to come type threats. Gets old fast. My mother is one of those that is adament that if Kerry wins, the terrorists will come for us, but really? What has Bush done to keep them out of the Usa? He shorted the INS the funds they need to police the borders, and encouraged people to look at Middle eastern men with fear, yet it would not be that hard to convince someone of European decent these days to come into the game as well...

But the benefit there was that they at least wanted to be around to see the results of their handiwork....
