'Morning, all! Just wanted to let you know that, by request of some folks on rec.music.filk, I've put links to streaming audio of my various Christmas songs up at the main site. To be specific, "Hey Frickin Nonny", "O Holey Knight", "O Yog Sothoth", and "Twelve Days of Star Wars".

Apart from that, feel free to use this as an open thread.

I've had a Trans-Siberian Orchestra song in my head for the past month from their new album.

"What is Christmas? Surely I don't know..."

Well, then, to follow up the old I'm a Cow, allow me to provide your loyal (and long-suffering) readers with Cows with Guns.

And in a similar vein I was driven insane... No, that's something else. But Combo Number Five has shown up on my Fiends list again.

I knew the songs, but I'd never seen the animations. Thanks, Josh!

FWIW, if you don't know them...

The stuff by Riddle Me This, who does "I'm a Cow" [the music, not the animation] is actually rather nifty. Sometimes it's just plain strange, but sometimes it's fantastic. http://www.riddleme.com/html/download.html [warning, it may try to resize your browser, grumble] contains 3 songs of theirs, including their whacky cover of BOC's "Godzilla" and "Macbar Techno" which is what you get when you mix techno music & a like of middle-eastern stylings.

[Disclaimer: I have no relation to RMT except for being a fan. I just like sharing the "joy" ...or "pain" as you prefer.]

Hey, Tom, does your guitar have a nickname?

I'm trying to write a Quik-E-Filk to the tune of the "Tom Slick" theme song, and this is all I have so far

Tom Smith!
Tom Smith!
Let me tell you why
He's a filkin' kind of guy

Now I need something to take the place of "Thunderbolt Grease-Slapper"

Nope, no nickname for the gitter. Also, it's been done. To death. To be blunt, I got a little tired of that joke back during the initial run of the cartoons, let alone the ensuing thirty-seven years....

Dammit, I shoulda known!

I figured Tom Slick was obscure enough a cartoon to pass under the pop-culture reference radar, but who am I kidding? We're dealing with FAN-BOYS fer chrissakes!

But, hey, think you've got it tough? Try being named after a horn-blowing angel!

Some of us FAN-GALS fondly remember Tom Slick as well--including this one. I wouldn't call it obscure, just old, except that by that admission I would be dating myself (which I think is illegal in Ohio).

There's no such word as "old" in Fanboy-dom (or Fangirl-dom), Marigold.

Twelve-String Capo-Crusader? OK there's one extra syllable in there but it's close if you slur a little.

Yah, I bet the Tom Slick/Smith jokes got old fast. Having an easy-to-parody name is not an easy load to bear [says she who is maiden-named Fox].

Tom, if you meant those songs to be streaming as in "can't download them and keep them around," as opposed to streaming as in "starts playing as soon as you click," then you need different server software.

I'm using the simplest, crudest method of streaming there is -- a link to an .m3u file. Why, have you downloaded them? :)

I got 12 Days of Star Worz to appear and play in iTunes, but it won't transfer to my iPod, which is where I really want it (unless you have an objection).

Y'wanna know? If you've actually downloaded that one, no big deal. I wouldn't object if you bought the "Best of ChiCon 2000" download with it, but it's not gonna kill me. The whole "I Want My Music On Napster" song is in line with that.

Overall, I'm trying to stick with this philosophy: If you're inclined to pay, by all means pay, and thank you. If you can't pay now, I can wait. If you don't want to pay, well, I wasn't gonna get money from you anyway.

I'll have a nude Christmas without you
I'm in the nude walking about you
I've looked under the bed, and around my shoe-tree
But it's just no use, I can't find my blue jeans
And when the cold winter starts blowin'
And when that old shrinkage starts showin'
You'll be covered up good with your jacket and hood
But I'll have a nude, nude Christmas

My personal Christmas tradition is to listen to my ancient tape of Navidades Radioactivas, a Spanish punk Christmas compilation album. There's a song on there that starts out a lot like Frosty the Snowman, except that the snowman never melts, and the townsfolk start to fear it and avoid it for generations. There's also a punk cover of The Little Drummer Boy, which is a great antidote for the Muzak you've been hearing in the malls for the past month.
