In case you hadn't heard the news, relatively unknown British director David Yates has the nod to direct Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Film London has an interview with him.
Let us all just hope that he stays truer to the text than this last fellow did. Prizoner of Azkaban was PAINFUL to watch, having read and enjoyed the book.
Hmm. Well. I did not like this book very much, I feel it was one of the weaker books as a self-contained story as opposed to moving things forward in The Potter Saga. Director Yates appears to have had experience working with young actors before, in a program for inner-city kids on Glascow. He seems to have experience working with previously-existing material from a book before, the new BRIDESHEAD REVISITED. I will venture cautious optimism for now.
Dayamn. I was really hoping they'd turn the reins over to CuarĂ²n again--cinematically, I think the third is the strongest of the three movies to date. OotP isn't listed on Yates' IMDB entry yet, so maybe there's still time. I'm not familiar with his work, so I won't say he's a bad choice, but I know what I like. :)
T'cha. No one has respect for PoA. The movie laid an extremely solid foundation for book 4 and 5 while staying within the boundries of the story. Certainly, I wish they had kept the Quiddich School Cup in there, as well as the earlier use of The Firebolt (Which did seem a -bit- tacked on in the end.) And not to mention the adventures of Harry in Diagon Alley (Which were an intresting part of the book.) But all together, he kept the most important parts in. I am, personally, More worried about Goblet of Fire, where there is TONS of stuff, almost all of which is important to the potter-storyline. This could mean problems for time constraints, although I believe they could make a 4 and 1/2 hour movie, and even little kids would sit calmly through the whole thing. ^_^
