That's a much better trailer than the one I saw before. And it looks awesomely fun. Of course, Hitchhikers started out as a script, so it should translate to a movie fairly easily.

Oh my...

Damn, its looking better indeed.

Mos Def just isn't odd enough to be Ford, too mundane.

And, I can't be certain, but from the minute flash of face, I swear Zaphod's second head is being played by Rik "The Young Ones" Mayall, but I'm probably wrong.

Mos Def is the ultimate cool hoopy frood! I think he'll be all right.

Apparently, Zaphod's second head is also Sam Rockwell, in an alternate interpretation.

Ain't It Cool News is carrying a good review of an early screening. Spoiler warning, if that term even applies to material adapted from other media.

I hadn't put the name with the face when I saw it before...but Arthur is friggin' Tim from "The Office!" Yay, dammit, yay!!

This trailer gives me much hope. Actually WATCHING the Vogons destroy the earth gave me far more of a giddy feeling than I figured it would. :)

Zaphod don't look quite right to me, but meh.

The biggest problem we're all going to have is that it seems to be a bit more goofy than dry. Especially Sam Rockwell (who I do like), who's a considerably less... nonchalant Zaphod than Mark-Wing Davey. But I am liking what I'm seeing.

The casting will take some getting used to, but so far it looks surprisingly true to the original material.

If I recall correctly, Marvin is manned by Britain's hardest-working little person, Warwick Davis, but is voiced by Alan Rickman. What is this, a Hogwarts faculty meeting? [grin]

It'll be interesting to see how Rickman's voice parses with Marvin's Personality.

Oh, I think Rickman is perfect casting. When I first read the announcement, I said "YES!" Just think of him in "Galaxy Quest, and slow down the speech pattern a bit, and you're there.

I share most of the casting / mood misgivings stated here (and elsewhere). Sam Rockwell is brilliant, but I'm not sure I like the approach, or the lack of british accent, which strikes me as being so integral to the rhythm of the dialogue, at least in its original form. Mos Def turns out to be quite a decent actor (I've seem him elsewhere) but I don't know if he's otherworldly enough for Ford.

But damn, I got chills whatching a few of those sequences. I'm still quite enthusiastic about this picture. Can't wait.

BTW, has anyone else here caught the new radio series (which covers the material in "Life the Universe, and Everything"?

:) I had links to MP3s of it a couple of months ago. I think they're dead now, though.

BBC kept each episode available for jut a week or so after the initial broadcast, so yes, the links would be dead now. I managed to capture them all, and burn them to audio CDs. Though honestly, they don't have the repeat listening appeal of the earlier series. Because they're adapted from a book, rather than vice versa, the narration hasa different feel. It takes you out of the action rather than feeling like a part of it. Still, it's great hearing all of the original cast members again.

A few observations

The biggest character change they seem to have made (according to what I've heard) is they've tacked on a romantic subplot that develops between Arthur and Trillian. Note the cries of "ARTHUR!" "TRICIA!" in the trailer. I could complain about that ruining Arthur's stance as a likable loser, but...eh, it's the movies. Certainly one of the biggest challenges in adapting Douglas Adams' episodic narrative to a movie is the addition of third-act tension. Besides, in the books Trillian DOES eventually bear Arthur's child, albiet in completely loveless circumstances.

They don't have to be in the movie, but I want the soundtrack album to contain new versions of "Marvin" and "Marvin I Love You" by Alan Rickman. GIMME!

I LOVE how, when the trailer starts, it looks kinda like the trailer of a small low-budget "Sideways"-esque comedy about human relations before it gets weird.

I notice they've moved the release date up a week, from May 6 to April 29. Either they'd rather compete with "XXX2" than "Kingdom Of Heaven," or they realized what would happen if you take the date 4-29 and jettison the nine and the hyphen.

I'll probably bring a towel the first time I see it. Who's with me?

Just Remember....

Dont Panic. ;)

This movie is going to rule. That's all that needs saying. This film looks quirky enough for a Best Picture nod.
