He missed deceleration. The slower we go, the tighter the orbit. Just point a big jet in the direction we're going (I suppose you'd have to rig a gimbal of some sort)and keep it firing.
I have read about a plan to use solar-powered ion thrusters to place a large asteroid outside the orbit of venus and drag it gravitationally outward into a zone where it would be habitable. If I remember correctly, the process was supposed to take 6000 years.
Presumably if you could do that, in 10 or 15,000 years you could keep one inside Earth's orbit and drag it incrementally down into the Sun.
