Ten Things I Have Done That You Likely Haven't:

1. Written seventeen songs in twenty-four hours.
2. Sung on the last radio show in the United States to have its own in-studio orchestra.
3. Walked a bicycle, after a spill, five miles to the repair shop, only to have the repairman fix the problem with one small motion taking literally less than two seconds.
4. Broken up an audience and the performers at The Vagina Monologues by following the, erm, climactic reenactment of every type of female orgasm with a well-placed "Encore!"
5. Gotten three drum lessons from Buddy Rich.
6. Stripped down to my underwear to play "Rocky" at The Rocky Horror Picture Show. (I was much thinner then.)
7. Eaten lychee sorbet.
8. Been paid to write a comic book. (Nope, never published.)
9. Had Virginia Hey sit on my lap.
10. Owned every incarnation and edition of the role-playing game RuneQuest, including the computer game.

I would think that just being Tom Smith is definitely something most people haven't done. :)

I don't know. I would guess there are a hell of a lot of people who have been Tom Smith.

Ah, the awesome woman in The Road Warrior. Got it!

Nope, haven't done any of those things.

I just riffed on my basic sorbet recipe, to wit:

3 cups water
1 cup sugar
1 cup (or more) pureed fruit (in this case, canned lychees wirred up in the food processor)
Lemon juice to taste

Combine water and sugar in a saucepan over high heat, bring to a boil, stir until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat. Cool.

Combine cooled syrup with pureed fruit. Taste. Add lemon juice if you like.

Freeze it in an ice-cream maker according to manufacturer's directions. Or if you don't have a freezer, pour it into a stainless steel bowl and put that in the freezer; wait half an hour, take it out and stir the ice that's formed into the center. Repeat freezing-and-stirring every 15 minutes or so until sorbet is achieved.

Finely diced ginger (fresh or candied) is very nice in lychee sorbet, too ...

Mm-mm-mm-MMMM, that sounds great. Yeah, we (Anne & [livejournal.com profile] huskiebear & I) had it at Jiko, the fanciest restaurant at the Animal Kingdom Lodge in Walt Disney World. I'm pretty sure that was the best meal of my life: a perfect, absolutely perfect filet, served with macaroni and white cheddar with a sweet wine sauce at the side. I'll talk to Les and reconstruct the meal later, but the appetizers included this amazing spicy peanut toast, and for dessert we also shared a pistachio creme brulee, which would've been the highlight of the meal if not for the sorbet.

OTOH I wrote and almost got published a module for RuneQuest. [they pulled at the last moment, for some corporate Bs reason.]

Oh, and serious envy on 9, I <3 Virginia Hey.

Well, serious envy on the writing/almost publishing. I won't say we're even, but.... ;)

And, technically it's two computer games. King of Dragon Pass (http://www.a-sharp.com/kodp/) is a non-real-time strategy game, very much steeped in the culture of Glorantha. And The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind (http://www.elderscrolls.com) was written by Ken Rolston, who used to write all kindsa RQ stuff for Chaosium, and the influence of RQ on VVardenfell is obvious and extremely kewl.

What, not "I'll have what she's having"?

On the other hand, I'm the kind of wag who waits 'til the end of a Shakespeare play and cries "Author!"

I considered it. :) But sheer timing decided it, i.e., it's faster and easier to say "Encore!" than "I'll have what she's having".

I think it's likely a lot of people on your flist have done some variation of #6; I've stripped down to underthings to play Janet (I was thinner then as well!). And I may not have had lychee sorbet, but I've had durian ice cream.

#2 Which radio station/studio and what year?

#3 'Doh! Well, I had a problem with my back in 1993 that plagued me for about 3 weeks. I saw a chiropractor, I saw a regular MD. I couldn't stand the pain, barely slept - I was given muscle relaxants, I had an MRI, I met with a neurosurgeon who (how shocking) said I needed surgery. As luck would have it, during this period I decided to attend Darkover, even though I was still in pain, and had forgone Philcon due to the pain, because Darkover was a local con. Jane Robinson (Dr. Jane) was there, saw me in pain, and asked me if I'd like her to see if she could help. I gratefully said yes, she felt around for about a minute, told me I had a rib out of alignment, gave me the equivalent of a hug, and cured the pain. God bless Dr. Jane.

WJR-AM, 760 in Detroit. It can't have been later than 1969. My mom was singing on the Jack Harris Open House Show, and I went with her for the taping, and I was apparently jukin' it up so much in the control booth that they brought me into the studio. I can't remember what I sang, although it could've been "Those Were The Days" (the Mary Hopkins version, not the Archie Bunker), which was one of my mom's standards.

When I was a kid, I not only got to jam with Buddy Rich, I also got to jam with Dizzy Gillespie. My Aunt's ex husband owned(s) Ted Vesley Music in Las Vegas. He had me taking clarinet lessons there for years. It is right off of Maryland Parkway, fairly close to the strip. Many musicians that play on the strip went there for equipment and to jam and hang out on occasion.

I'm curious to know what fix could be that simple but non-obvious over a five mile walk.
I haven't had lychee sorbet but it was on the short list of things I was considering making for a New Year dinner (I went with lime-and-basil sorbet (between main courses), and banana and walnut-and-black-pepper-brittle ice creams as desert options).

Oh, it was a 5-speed, and the chain had gotten loose, and it was extremely unobvious as to how to put it back on around that complicated spring contraption on the rear wheel. I'm a whiz with hand tools and computers, but mechanical stuff and I simply do not get a long.

I have done #8 on your list, Tom.

I don't use my journal for stuff like this, but it was an interesting exercise, so off the top of my head:

1. Had an unassisted triple play in tee ball.

2. Played a regular, coin-operated pinball machine for 5 1/2 hours on a single quarter.

3. Fired a book publisher.

4. Caused security alerts in two airports on the same trip.

5. Played a computer game by modem on a teletype terminal in 1976, and won.

6. Said the word "shit" in front of 800 boy scouts and their parents.

7. Conducted a wedding ceremony, dressed as Cardinal Richlieu.

8. Wrote a complete novel for college credit.

9. Hit one of my parents' cars with the other one.

10. Ended a relationship with one woman and began with another, only to discover they had both been married to the same man.

did #9. hit dad's pickup truck with mom's blazer, my first day driving on my learner's permit(age 18). no damage to the pickup, took out the right headlight of the blazer, and did not drive again till just before my 21st birthday, where i took two days of driving lessons, aced the test, and was scared of my own car for nearly a month before i forced myself to drive to work by deliberately missing the last bus that could even remotely get me there on time.
way more info than necessary, i know, but my blood sugar's rather low, so it makes me wordy as i correct it.
