Thankfully, The Incredibles won Best Animated, and congrats to Morgan Freeman for Best Supporting Actor. The list is updated here. Thoughts?

Was Andrew Lloyd Webber really playing piano, or was it synched?

No, the real question is: was Beyonce the only singer in town who wasn't busy tonight? Jeez.

I thought she did OK with the French song, but her Phantom outfit and song could have been better.

Well, part of the problem with the Phantom was song was because it kinda sucked. I mean, you can totally see Andrew Lloyd Webber sitting at home and going, "Hm, Phantom's going to be a movie now... I simply must add a song in order to qualify for "Best Original Song"." So he pulled one from one orifice or another. :P

I see very few movies and pay little attention to them, but this year marks a new low in my movie awareness; not only is Prisoner of Azkhaban the only nominee for anything that I've actually seen, I didn't even recognize the names of some of the major nominees when they started talking Oscars.

Oh, and what's this about "Achievement in Blah" instead of "Best Blah" for a bunch of the awards? That's how they're listed on the site Tom linked, so I assume that's what the awards are this year. They were all "Best ..." the last time I paid even my minimal amount of attention to the Oscars.

I was not impressed with Chris Rock. Give me Johnny or Whoopie anyday. Was this his first time? Was he nervous, or is he always that unpolished?

Might have been a problem that his style is largely off the cuff, and when he has to read a teleprompter, it slows him down a bit and makes him seem clumsy. :)

At least it wasn't Billy Crystal. Anybody but Billy Crystal. Ugh.

Cassini has returned some incredible views of Saturn's moon Hyperion. Previously, little was known about this small, potato-shaped body. New views are only bound to generate more questions than answers.

Don't know what Hyperion had to do with the Oscars, but it's definitely more interesting to watch!

Yep, and the triangular object beside it is a Starbuck's.

Starbuck's Colonial Viper, that is.

It was fun seeing Brad Bird accept his Incredibles award - he's a local kid, and hid a few Easter eggs in the movie for his old Corvallis croneys.

Me, I liked Chris Rock. And he certainly cleans up nicely.

And I was thrilled about Jamie Foxx's win for Ray - it's a terrific movie, and he was just great in it.

Completely unrelated but, I've had my attempts to reply to your e-mail about The Ballad of Rupert returned as undeliverable and marked, "This is a permanent error."

is there a problem with your e-mail?

I did get a reply from you some days ago, although I'm not sure which reply. Something seems to be goofy w/ "tom at tomsmithonline dot com". filkertom at yahoo dot com is much more trustworthy, and as of tomorrow I'm hoping to have eliminated the need for the former completely.

Glad you go the reply. It's still telling me it couldn't deliver it.... ho hum.

Good luck sorting the e-tangle.

An associate of mine made the observation that "Best Animated Feature" is essentially the "Credit to Your Race" Oscar. That category was created so that the Academy would never again face a debacle like Beauty and the Beast being nominated alongside respectable movies.

That having been said, I hope that next year doesn't see the creation of a "Best Original Screenplay, Animated" category.

I hope they just get rid of the stupid category altogether. As you say, it really slanders perfectly deserving movies, such as The Incredibles, which was the best film I saw in 2004. And there just aren't enough animated films made to justify it.

I'd really like a "Best Ensemble Cast" award.

Am I the only person out there that had (and still has) no interest in Very Expensive Baby?

Yay on the Incredibles, would have liked to see Finding Neverland do a little better, loved Aviator.

Could be. Anything that gets best picture, director, actress and supporting actor ought to be at least worth seeing once.

I'll probably wait for the DVD, but I'm newly curious, at least.

Nope, no interest in MDB here either.

I had no interest in Sideways either. I may lose indie cred for it, but really? BAH. Eternal Sunshine and Finding Neverland deserved more noms, and Aviator deserved more wins.
