I don't often get into personal stuff on my LJ. Dunno why; that's just how it shook out. But a few notes now:

First, best wishes to everyone on my Friend's List, but especially all of you going through personal crises. My God, it's scary how many people have become injured or desperately ill the past few days. Please please please take care, and, if nothing has happened to you, watch your ass.

Second, I've got a humdinger of a cold. Not made easier by the cold weather here in Ay-Squared. And I've gotta go do some laundry at some point.

Third, much easier to do laundry now. Much easier to do many, many things now. My ancient Ford Tempo, that sturdy little embarassment of a car that I let turn into a garbagemobile, has finally bit the dust. And so I had to replace her. And, thanks to a friend at a car dealership, I lucked into a sweet deal. You will not believe it when you see it. I can still barely believe it myself.

A very-good-condition Grand Caravan.

Upgrading from my little crackerbox of a car to a purple (official color, and now name of the vehicle, "Garnet") van that seats seven and holds approximately six craploads of con stuff. Very comfortable and fully loaded. Cruise control, V6, functioning heat and AC. Oh yeah. So, Con Season is gonna be a lot easier this year.

Fourth, apparently lots of people are getting "Return undeliverable" or somesuch message when they send stuff to tom at tomsmithonline dot com. I don't know what the problem is; it's only a forwarding address, and I am receiving things going there. But, if you need to get ahold of me, filkertom at yahoo dot com is the best way. I check that, like, thirty times a day.

And how are you doing?

Yay new car! I know at ConFusion you were seriously needing a new one. And a van will be perfect for hauling stuff hither and yon to cons.

Looking forward to Penguicon. You *are* going to be there; right?

Oh, hell, yeah. And the best part is, when I want to grab friends and head off to the Deadwood Grill or Red Hot & Blue, I can at last be the one to say, "Pile in! I got room!"

As to new cars, in November, I got a nice bright shiny new Mazda3 and I'm still loving it.

I did get it. I apologize for not getting back to you, but part of my fun weekend also included a small outpatient procedure (utterly non-dangerous, diagnostic, and it went well, but I was a little out of it after). Good luck on the job!

Be well. Take your chicken soup.

I'm tempted to suggest a Bujoldian variation on the car name: Garnet Five.

Thanks. I had some chili earlier; later I'll have some roasted garlic soup. :)

I like the Garnet Five idea, but it didn't suggest itself -- and I just reread Diplomatic Immunity! I admit that it was more inspired by thoughts of Garnet Rogers.

Verily, a worthy inspiration as well. He still sounds creepily like his dead brother to me but I should try to get over that.

Garlic = Korean Penicillin according to a close family friend. So burn the lil' germies out, that's the way.

Compared to just about everyone else I know, wonderfully well. Tired and getting over some kind of bug that squatted in my chest and stuck Westlife posters all over the walls with sellotape. Jan is coping with her various pains by liberal applications of sleep and HP slash. One car is MOT'd and the other about to be, and we have stamps for the tax discs, so that shouldn't be a problem this time round. Work is hell, but then work is always hell, so that's normal. The cats are doing well in their various ways. Doctor Who's coming back, and we'll hopefully be at FilkContinental, so that's something to keep going for. All round, not nearly as bad as it could be.

My baby boy is growing well, but my daughter is still in the hospital recovering from getting her appendix out. Apparently the doctors decided to give her a CT scan after she had the surgery, in order to determine if she needed the surgery. They figured out that it wasn't necessary right before they turned the machine on. This is the third time I've had a bad experience at Beaumont Royal Oak, so three strikes and they're out. I would never recommend them. We're considering getting her moved to a different hospital, as this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Glad to hear about your new car. I can't believe you were still driving a Tempo. :)

Welcome to the family of Caravan owners. I am 93000.00 miles into our second and I am still in love. The Brick Swan, our first, had some issues with peeling roof paint and the air conditioning, but is still running fine at 160,000.00 for a friend. Eridani, the current one, had a little transmission trouble last summer. Thank heaven for the extended warranty. But even then, it was trouble with the transmission's chips moving parts.
All in all, we have been very happy with them.
Good luck and Long life to Garnet!

I just went the opposite, from a 93 Safari to a 04 Cavalier. I miss my van and am now officially jealous of you.

That said, Talk Like A Pirate went wonderfully both times in the weekend. I think that Luke got a recording at opening ceremonies, but the version with The Nick Atoms and everyone else at the Dementia Smackdown was brilliant. I hope that the recording went well. It was direct off the board and the NAs weren't miked, but they were loud so it should be ok.

I find myself inordinately pleased to know Tom's continuing to spread the TLAPD meme. The Pirate Guys are, too (when they have time to be pleased about anything beyond proofing the galleys for their upcoming Penguin pirate book* ...

Me, I'm working hard by day and relaxing hard by night, ang generally enjoying one of the earliest Western Oregon springs in memory, even while worrying a bit about the drought it might portend.

* A book about pirates published by Penguin, not a book about Penguine pirates. Just to be clear.

How about if I add another link to your freestuff page rather than putting the actual .mp3 on our site?

That way you get a few more visitors who might want to hear (and buy!) some of your other stuff, too... (lord knows we're getting enough exposure that we can afford to share!)

I have a 96 Grand Caravan myself, its been heavily (ab)used over the years, hauling animals, pulling a trailer, and making many long distance trips, but hasn't needed much more than a new serpentine belt and your typical maintenance of tires, brakes, coolant and oil changes.

Now, is that a metric crapload or an imperial crapload?

You commented on someone and got fangirled as "THE" Tom Smith. Something like that can't help but pique my interest. And, well, that led to the Pop-Tart discovery.

After seeing some of the stuff at The Smoking Gun, I've made up tour riders should I wake up to find that I'm Bono. I think an autographed edition of A Confederacy of Dunces is on there next to bunny slippers and a Viking helmet.

> And how are you doing?

To quote Marvin: life, don't talk to me about life.

I am jealous of the new car. My trusty Focus is getting killed by this year's winter, it won't survive another one. I get to replace it just as the car payments for it are done. Figures on the time.

I finally figured out that you changed all the TSO webpages so my saved urls no longer work. I thought the site was down for extended maintanence. Please remember: not everyone is willing to enable Flash due to all the spammer flash ads that a lot of websites now contain. The old site had good navigation if you skipped the front page, not so with the new site. I was going through TSO withdrawal until a friend pointed out the change to me.

Now, aren't you sorry you asked?

Very sorry about life. About the site: First, I have to go in a fix some links. I should have that all done Wednesday morning.

Second, I said this the last time I updated the site: I like Flash. Many sites use Flash. I try to be polite about it, and it makes several things much, much easier.

That's why I also put the text links at the bottom (including at the bottom of the main page, main1.htm), for those who don't like Flash. I have worked hard to make it work for everybody.

I can certainly do the site without Flash. I choose not to.

Thank you.

My cousin has a Grand Caravan. It is a nice little car. What model do you have? In the model she has, the computer chip that did the automatic transmission went wonkey at 10,000 miles. We replaced it, but its just a note. It is a great van. She regularly helps the local comic guy we go to get his product from UPS and goes to SCA events in it. :-)

Its nice you have a vehical that you can depend on. :-) The good thing about the Grand Caravans is that unless you load them to the gills they can still move fairly quickly.

P.S. The 98 SE should be fine. It was the 93 or 94 that had the bad transmission chip.

I revisited the stie just now and was able to find the text links that I was not seeing before. For some reason, all I saw was the graphic section above the links but not the links themselves. I guess that I was just at the end of a long bad day when I made my post.

And I also like Flash, I just hate all the spam ads that some websites are now inserting into their content that can not be disabled without disabling flash itself. It's worse than spam email sometimes, at least that you can recognize and delete without reading it. Those flash ads are more percistant and harder to avoid without crippling sites that make good use of flash like yours does.

But I am still jealous over the new car :-)

I know what you mean about those ads. I promise (and it's a real easy promise to keep) that the only things I will ever use Flash for are navigation or actual content. I'm not selling ads on the site to begin with, and I hate pop-ups, popunders, and I've never been fond of popovers or Pop-Tarts (although Anne and [livejournal.com profile] huskiebear love 'em). I'm doing, and will continue to do, my best to make going to my site a fun experience on as many system configs as possible.

as for me, i'm stressed but doing my best to hide it. four classes this semester means four midterms this week. ish. add to that waiting to find out if bloomington accepted my fiction as worthy for their grad program, trying to graduate in may, and trying to survive the rest of the semester without catching the plague that's been sweeping campus, and i'm a wonderful little ball of stress. after may 14th, tho, that'll all be out of the way in some fashion or another and i can build myself back up to hyper fangirl mode for marcon. :-D
