Big huge important announcement for Girl Genius fans: Starting April 18, the comic becomes a free online publication, to be updated Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The quarterly comic is suspended (although the new pages will be collected annually).

Huh. I don't know whether to be pleased or sorry. I mean, more Girl Genius is cool, and free is cool, though I'll eat every hat in my closet if Foglio actually maintains that pace for any length of time whatsoever. And I'll miss the actual physical comics; buying them lets me feel like I'm supporting the project and encouraging it to continue, but also guarantees I'll still have a copy a year from now. Webcomics are always iffier that way.

At least he's not just canceling it outright. Yet.

As was pointed out in the girlgenius Yahoo group, Phil simply doesn't abandon characters. And he's got a cheat out of the gate: This would be about the time that the prett-much-complete Issue 14 would go to the printer. He's got at least ten weeks of material ready to go before he even starts.

I do know what you mean about the physical comics. I will absolutely buy the graphic-novel collections.

I have heard many many good things about Girl Genius... I guess I should see if I can borrow a set and read it.

You can also start here (http://www.studiofoglio.com/fun/freestuff.html). Although the Secret Blueprints, down at the bottom, are filled with spoilers for the first ten issues.

I promptly went over to the website and bookmarked it.
Now to annotate the calendar on the wall next to the computer...

Whoa- I guess this means I'll get my fix more regularly, but I will miss getting the stiff envelopes in the mail. Graphic novels will store more neatly, though. I wonder if this is more craziness with publication rights.

Don't think so. Not knowing, I suspect a combination of temporary cash flow problems and a desire to boost their market. Kaja posted their sales reports, and they're much lower than I think they should be for such an excellent book, which (as someone who actually used to place orders in a comic shop for two years) tells me they need to make people more aware of their existence.

Yeek! Thanks for the alert. I'm not sure whether I'm glad they'll be posting more often, or upset we only get one page at a time... and that'll make it harder to go back and re-read. (sigh) Oh well. Guess we'll have to adjust. (twitch) Think they'll put up an RSS feed?
